Going Nuclear Again
    #3350813 - 11/12/04 11:37 AM (12 years, 5 months ago)

bush wants to start building reactors again. nuclear power is cleaner than hydrobased energy plants and produces less carbon dioxide. (coal plants) and nuclear plants would reduce the U.S. dependence on foreign oil.

Problem with nuclear power is we dont know what to do with the waste. Its not like you can put it in a safe spot.

Nuclear power is extremely dangerous. If one of the cooling rods over heats and explodes it would seep radiation over a 200 mile radius.

When chernobyl had a meltdown they felt fall out all the way in warsaw poland.

nuclear energy is not a good idea

a) after decades of development it is still not cost-effective at all which is why they need govt subsidies so much

b) it produces waste we don't know what to do with

c) its dangerous

and most importantly d) there are plenty of other good options in renewable energy: wind, solar (its come a long ways), geothermal, biomass fuel, and hydrogen.

Red Crayon,
Here's a post I made on Yucca, which is what Bush intends to do with the waste:

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat...rue#Post3301156

In my opinion, Bush should continue with this only as long as he contibues to support and fund Yucca.

Nuclear Power still has some dangers, but we're not at risk of the same specific accident that happened in Chernobyl because the Russians were using graphite to moderate their cooling back then. Once graphite gets overheated, it causes a chain reaction, which leads to an explosion. I don't think any US plants are using graphite anymore.

Everntually, there will be a cheaper way to use wind or solar power. Until then, it's best that the US get off its coal dependence.

I've always been interested in Solar and wind power, it's pretty interesting to see how easy and economical it can be in the long-run. My next house will have some sort of Solar panels, I just haven't figured out for what yet.

> Its not like you can put it in a safe spot.

The problem isn't that you cannot store it safely, but rather how long you must store it safely. Nuclear waste can take from hundreds of thousands of years to many millions of years before it is safe.

> Nuclear power is extremely dangerous.

So are many things in life. I would qualify nuclear power as risky rather than dangerous. A fine line, but nuclear power production is only dangerous is something or somebody messes up.

> If one of the cooling rods over heats and explodes

Uh, ok. Cooling rods?

Reactors have control rods, not cooling rods. Control rods absorb neutrons in the reactor, stopping the reaction.

Reactors also have fuel rods, which contain the radioactive fuel which is fissioned releasing energy.

Reactors have a cooling system which transfers the energy from the reactor to a generator which produces electrical power. The cooling is also needed to keep the reactor from melting.

> When chernobyl had a meltdown they felt fall out all the way in warsaw poland.

Chernobyl was a graphite moderated reactor. These are very risky. If the system overheats, then the graphite catches on fire, the control rods fail, and the entire thing poisons millions of miles of land.

Most reactors are water moderated. If the water is released from the reactor, the reaction stops. (Moderators slow down fast neutrons to a lower energy level allowing them to be captured by an atomic nucleus, causing fission. When the moderator is gone, the neutrons go too fast to be captured and the reaction stops.) Of course, if the water does escape, you still have problems... three mile island style.

I would much rather see them work on hot fusion as a solution to the problem rather than building more fision plants.

Well i mean there is different types of radiation. Cesium 137 or Alt 84. I believe cesium has a half life of 30 years. Alt 84 has a half life over thousands of years.

What happened at Chernobyl was the water that was supposed to cool the rods wasnt working correctly. So the rods started melting into eachother and they exploded and seeped radiation accross Ukraine.

Both of those interest me too, however I am always puzzled why biofuels are over looked. Vegetable oil can run a diesel engine fine. I just don't get why the taxpayer has to subsidize farming while destroying over capacity crops when that capacity could be used to produce biodiesel, saving taxpayers money, creating jobs, and reduce foreign oil imports (also subsidized).

nuclear waste is relatively small in volume and mass to other energy wastes. some can be recycled. this country sucks at recycling anything. some alternatives to dumping are being explored, such as accelerator transmutation of waste. and i would be more afraid of living next door to al-qaeda then a nuclear power plant.

we recycle probably more than most countries do, here in Michigan we get 10 cents for a aluminum can. The only thing I see wrong with recycling centers which I think is the real reason most people don't recycle is that they want the recycler to jump through hoops in order to recycle. I tried recycling some plastic bottles and they wouldn't take them because the caps were on and they weren't washed out. Other places want you to do all the prep work without offering anything in return ie: newspapers, oil, batteries etc.
