fungus growing together

if two mushrooms are joined at the base, and one is mature, how do you pick it without disturbing the other? or you just don't?

The veil is breaking on one, and there's a younger one at it's base.

my last cake still isn't fruiting, and I promised I'd give it one more day. I misted above it last night because it felt really light compared to the other cakes, so I figured somehow it must have gotten dry.

Today, however, the fluffy mycelium on the top looks like it's flattening out, and it might even be bruising on the sides, though that might be from before.

I'm confused because I've read I'm not supposed to spray the cakes so as not to cause aborts, but it does feel really light...

I had some monster first shrooms that exploded to maturity over the course of 2 days, so maybe these stole all the moisture?

Then I suppose misting or dunking would be good....

I'll post pictures if that would be helpful

no it sounds normal. If you picked joined shrooms you wanna pick em both. some times there's a couple shrooms that mature before the rest and you can pick those if you don't want spore dropped all over your casings...

We call them clusters.  Just let them grow up a bit.  It's okay if you let the bigger one drop spores for awhile. :wink:

I thought letting them grow after the veil opens just lets them take nutrients from the other mushies? I keep reading that, yet how else would you acheive a flush but by leaving them till they all grow out, right?

As for the lighter weighing one, should I spray it or just give it time?

they dont really grow after the viel breaks. Give the smaller ones time to grow up, if you notice the large one starting to not look so healthy, pick them all.

ok.

my partner in crime thought he read something about splicing joined mushrooms at the base so you could pick one that is mature if it is connected to another growing on.

I've also read posts where removing a mature shroom helped the growing one.

Regardless, that last one is still not fruiting and is feeling light. Should I mist it? It feels so much lighter than the others, I can only imagine due to loss of water

Pick the mushroom as soon as the veil begins to tear. Spores all over your casing layer can inhibit further pinhead development. If you've got a cluster of 2 and one is ready and the other isn't then i'd pick them both when the larger one is ready.

I wonder why these cakes are fruiting so unevenly?

Lastly, the 4th cake is still not fruiting, and it does feel very much lighter than the others.  Should I mist it?

That sucks. The only thing you could do is cut that big one off but it will leave open mushroom tissue which will be more susceptible (sp?) to contamination. I dunno. If your 4th cake hasn't started pinning yet then mist it.
