Legend of the Ancient Zip-Lock - Dunking - Techniques?
    #3350373 - 11/12/04 08:22 AM (12 years, 26 days ago)

So I'm using ziplocks for dunking this time for reasons beyond my control, and aside from filling them to the top, I can't get my cake to sit completely underwater.

For reference these are still my half pint BRF cakes, so they aren't very large.  I'm using around 4" of water in my ziplocks and then I try to squeeze out all the air so that it will increase the water level while forcing the cake down into the deep part of the bag in the bottom.  This worked with only partial success, as the cakes are only around 80% covered at best with water.

Will 80% coverage still get me near the benefits of an entire submerging?

Any ideas on how to hold the cake underwater with normal house hold shtuff without filling the bags 100% with water?

I live in the country and am using spring water bought in stores, and I ran out last night when doing my dunking.  But luckily I had two 20 oz spring water bottles in the fridge that got me the rest of the way through.

I use the same aluminum baking pans that I've been using for casing, and my cakes aren't completely submerged either...

I do notice that after dunking they are sitting lower in the water, which would indicate that they are taking on water. I have tried to figure out a way to completely submerge them, but I didn't think it was a big deal.

I suppose I could keep cleaned jars around, and put them back into them with a lid.. That keeps them submerged.

Don't you have one of those water dispensing machines nearby? no piggly wigglies?

I'm sure you are okay with 80%, though. Mycelium network move nutes and water pretty fast around the network.

Why don't you make one of these?

What are the clear tubes that you have sticking up off the spindle?

That's a very interesting idea Sam.  You amaze me.

I have a few of them cd spindles lying around from old CD-Rs, that's what it's from right?

Is that tyvek in the bottom as well, or how did you do that?

those are needles. I have the covers on them when they aren't in use. I have a curious ferret that can get hurt by these things.

The needles go straight into the cake and the plastics on the needles hold the cake down. Needles I use were 21g1.5"
