Home Steamer instead of Pressure Cooker?
    #3347487 - 11/11/04 05:33 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

Hello all! I have a steamer that I use for veggies, rice and such. I was wondering if it would be possible to use the steamer instead of a PC? My friend just started, and has been using the Boil tek with BRF, but he would like to use popcorn. Anyone have any experience or know why this wouldn't work? Thanks!

No - a steamer will not do nearly the same job as a PC....if you can't get a PC, then stick with the PF tek and boil the jars...

In my opinion, you should try it. If you fail, you've only lost some popcorn and a little spore solution.. and time, of course. And you will know that you need a PC.

I have heard that grains are much more difficult to sterilize since they can harbor heat resistant endospores, but I haven't recieved an adequate response as to why BRF is any different and can't or doesen't have the potential to harbor the same contams.

I said it in a post yesterday and I'll say it again:

You can do it right, or you can do it the half-assed way. Whatever you do, the results will go hand in hand.

Would you consider boiling BRF jars half-assed? If so, I agree. If not, I don't agree, but only because I don't understand yet.

I know there is at least 1 person here who has success just boiling their WBS, so it's at least possible.

alright i boil my jars and i also use the pf tek. so far about 1/6 of them have aborted, and i have 4 that are near full colonization. i still consider that good odds. i boil for 1 hr and 15 minutes.
