From: http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=st..._privateryan_dc

Paraphrased intro: ABC is planning to air 'Saving private Ryan', unedited. The affiliates are afraid of getting fined millions of dollars by the FCC similiar to what happened to CBS, Howard Stern, etc...

Quote:

Janice Wise, spokeswoman for the FCC's enforcement bureau, said they had received calls from broadcasters asking if the film would run afoul of the rules. Wise said the commission was barred from making a prebroadcast decision "because that would be censorship."

"If we get a complaint, we'll act on it," she said.

So it is censorship if they tell somebody that their broadcast will be fined before it is aired, but not censorship if they fine somebody after their broadcast aired because the feds find it indecent? I might not be the brightest star in the sky, but I don't see a difference between the two other than timing.

Well it's not the feds who find it indecent. As the quote suggested, fines would only arise if someone complains about the broadcast.

There are people in this world who will complain about anything.

Well its still censorship, for sure. But if I were ABC, I'd rather them warn me of the fine beforehand, then I could say "will airing this movie still be profitable considering the fine?" Its actually pretty considerate.

Besides why would anyone complain about saving private ryan?

Yea true, but it doesn't make violence look fun, not to mention its an all-american story of soldiers at war serving their country, patriots love it.

I don't think anyone will complain. Even if people did complain, I don't think the FCC would do anything. They apparently have the moral authority to determine what American can and cannot handle. Spielberg gets a free pass. I remember ABC running Schindler's List unedited a few times. I think that's quite a bit more graphic than Saving Private Ryan. And I'm sure at least some people complained about it.

I really still can't believe how much that incident freaked those geezers out.

You forget, 99% of all neo-con babies are born fully clothed... they cannot handle the sight of bare skin, as nudity is a moral sin requiring huge fines for the living and an afterlife of eternal damnation burning in hell for the dead. The neo-con bible clearly states, "And Jesus said judge others before they have a chance to judge you for you have the wisdom of God and are truely sin free." I am pretty sure oil ties into this somehow, but I haven't figured that part out yet...

http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/20041115/tv_nm/television_ryan_dc_3
Quote:

NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - The Federal Communications Commission (news - web sites) has confirmed it received complaints about the uncensored broadcast of Oscar-winning war movie "Saving Private Ryan" on ABC-affiliated stations last week.

An FCC (news - web sites) official said several complaints were filed Friday, the day after the Veterans Day broadcast, but couldn't say how many or who or where they are from. The commission has to have a complaint before it can take action.

Groups affiliated with the American Family Assn., a conservative Christian group that monitors the airwaves, pledged Thursday to flood the FCC with complaints about the language and violence in Steven Spielberg's film.

All told, "Ryan" aired in about 71% of the country, according to Nielsen data. Of ABC's 225 affiliates, 159 went ahead with "Ryan," while 66 did not. All of ABC's owned stations aired "Ryan," though stations in major markets including Boston, Atlanta and Nashville declined.

An ABC spokeswoman said Friday that the network received favorable viewer feedback and was willing to respond to any complaints the FCC receives. The network issued a statement standing by its decision.

"ABC applauds the majority of its local television affiliates across the country who chose to be part of this important Veterans' Day television event," the network said.

Despite the fact that about 30% of ABC's stations pre-empted "Ryan," the film's ratings were strong enough to power the network's to its best performance in total viewers and the coveted adults 18-49 demographic this season. An audience of 7.7 million tuned in.

never underestimate the conservative christian.

Seriously, they said that it was going to be uncensored. They probably had warnings before and throughout the movie saying that it was going to be unedited. Half of all tv's made after june 1, 1999, and all tv's made after january 1, 2000 all require v-chips. Turn on the v-chip and your god damn kids can't watch it if you feel it is inappropiate. What do you think it is there for?

It is also hypocritical of that group. They most likely support and back bush, a self-proclaimed war president. They probably support the war in iraq, but are against violence in a movie. I wonder if they realize that the violence and language in saving private ryan isn't close to as bad as what goes on in a real war.

I am glad though that the FCC will not be taking any action.

That's what pisses me off to no end!!!!!!!!

I almost wish they were taking action.

The FCC has the grandiosity, and the apparent legal authority, to decide when violence, sex, language is moral and when its immoral.

Only on the open airwaves. Comedy Central could be broadcasting wall to wall cunts, but no provider will show it because their customers will go berserk. This is not censorship.

> This is not censorship.

My original gripe was that the FCC will not tell you up front if they will fine you for a broadcast, because that would be censorship... but they will fine you afterwards, if they disagree with what you show which is not censorship (yeah right).

Imagine if this were a law, like the speed limit on a road. "We won't tell you what the speed limit is, but if we feel that you are driving too fast, then we fine you... oh, and there is no court or jury or lawyers or appeals... you pay what we say or we toss you in jail. If you don't like it, then move someplace that has protection for freedom of speech, like Canada."
