casing without vermiculite

i am looking for a good casing recipe WITHOUT vermiculite in it. i have read that peat would do the job, but i have a few questions about it: 1) would that work??? 2) should i add limestone or baking soda to correct PH? 3) should i add some hydrogen peroxide to water for avoiding contamination? (wouldn't it kill the micelium?) 4) could hydrogen peroxide be used also in the water i'll use for watering? 5) what about the use of perlite in casing? i mean in the top layer? thanx

>1) would that work??? Yes.
2) should i add limestone or baking soda to correct PH? Limestone flour or calcium carbonate, 10% by volume.
3) should i add some hydrogen peroxide to water for avoiding contamination? (wouldn't it kill the mycelium?) Possible, not required.
4) could hydrogen peroxide be used also in the water I'll use for watering? Possible, not required.
5) what about the use of perlite in casing? i mean in the top layer? Perlite doesn't hold too much water, it is rather not too beneficial as casing ingredient, although some did use it in the past.

what about chalk? a stamets recipe is: 2 parts peat, 1 part chalk, 1 part water. would that work, with regular watering?

I don't know where you have this from though. Last time I checked stamets recommended:
* 10 units peat * 1 unit calcium sulfate (gypsum) * 1 unit calcium carbonate (chalk)
Read http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/7974 .

capter VIII as read here: http://annonymer.members.easyspace.com/CHAPTER_VIII_THE_CASING_LAYER.htm see "formula 2". actually calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is NOT chalk (CaSO4)

You either take your popcorn and case it or spawn it to more substrate (poo and straw). Case the popcorn directly you spread it out on a tray 1.5-2 inches thick then spread a 1/2"-3/4" casing layer (NO NUTRIOUTION! No wood, no poo, no straw, no popcorn, no rye, no honey water, no sugar of any kind..NO NUTRITION!) on it. I use coc coir and verm, either can be used, peat moss can be used..potting soil could work (not the best IMO but I havn't tried it myself..I still think its inferior for us though you may be able to get good results). Whatever, as long as it has no food. You do not want the myc to get nutes as it colonizes the casings layer, they are done feeding and now you just want them to fruit.
If you want more substrate look up spawning to poo. You can take poo, straw, poo mixed with verm, straw mixed with verm, poo mixed with straw (the best of all those) whatever..some mix of poo and straw and pasturize it. Then you mix in your popcorn (this is known as spawning) with your shit and straw in a big ass rubbermaid..cover it with plastic and wait for the poo/straw to FULLY colonize. That is now your substrate (just as if you poored out the popcorn by itself once fully colonized) and once fully colonized you can case it. You want the poo/straw to be anywhere from 2-6 inches thick (I like 4 ish) and then a 1 inch (unless you got more like 2 inch substrate, then you want 3/4" or so) non nutrious casing layer (see above about non nutritious casing layers).

this still doesn't answer to my initial question: since i can't find any form of calcium carbonate or coco coir in the place where i live, but only peat and chalk, i'd like to know if any of you have ever tried a peat+chalk formula, given the fact that chalk as i know it is not calcium CARBONATE (CaCO3) but calcium SULFATE (CaSO4), unless this might be a wrong translation from american english to british english...

Sorry, I don't have any exp with that. But I do know something you don't.
Chalk is one of three chemicals. Calcium carbonate, calcium sulfate or calcium phosphate. All three are good salts for buffering in 7.5-8 range.
no need to bash american english, even if we speak a bit funny in some parts. My trip to Gibralter gave me a taste of ya'als English. Took me a whole day just to start understanding half of what was said. But we all speak the same way... with grace.
