Used Hawks tek using bird seed..well, after pressure cooking and cooling..one of the jars has moving worms in it..I assume the maggots are from the bird seed, but how in the world can it survive pressure cooking at 15psi for 45 minutes..anyone else have this problem?
It is so gross.

Super worms. I've had meal worms survive in rice flour after 10 min in the microwave.

euuwww that's vile....Whenever I think of maggots I can't help but remember that scene in lost boys where the rice turns into maggots. ICK!
I can't stand maggots or Cockroaches. I am not afraid of spides or anything...I just can't stand those two critters. They just seem so dirty and they can get into anything. Gives me the shivers just thinking of it.

Sounds like grain weevlis. I can't imagine how they can survive pressure cooking but others here have reported the same problem.

Some lovely "little critters" are amazing. Just look at the roach, that damn thing can survive a direct nuclear attack! I'd toss those jars though!
I've got nicotine stains on my fingers.

I agree, toss those out and get a new bag of birdseed. Sounds like the one you obtained the seed from was contaminiated.

Donate them to a hospital. You know that there is a procedure where they use sterile maggots to eat decayed flesh. They have had amazing results using maggots to eat gangrenous flesh off patients over a period of days. Of course these people are also given intravenous valium or they would probably go freakin insane thinking about this.
Tell me something good then I might agree with you..

lol:) I am debating using bird seed again. I wonder if they were pressure cooked for an hour if that would help.

Re: the Lost Boys thing, I went over to finish a bowl of rice while trippin', once, and lo, it turned into maggots. Actually I thought it was kinda funny, trying to stab the rice-critters with my fork whilst they were squirming around. Heh.
Back on topic though, that's pretty interesting. I hadn't thought it would be possible for living creatures to survive the jar set-up process. Hmm. Life finds a way, as they say...
