jars not colonizing!
    #3343857 - 11/10/04 11:14 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Well i have 8 half pint jars that have brf and vermiculite in them with b+ spores. Its been like 10 days and so far only 2 of the jars are colonizing. Could it be that i packed the mix down too tight. I packed the substrate as much as i could and there was like an inch of space left at the top of the jar so i filled that with more verm. Also, on these 2 jars i used a little wore than a quarter cup of water in the mix and with the others i used a quarter cup. Could it be that the others are not wet enough? The 2 jars that have activity look more damp. Any thoughts will be greatly appretiated. Oh yeah temp. is at 80

its probaly becuase you packed them in so thigh theres no way for the mycelium to grow through it and its having trouble colonizing. itll probally finsish but slower than usaul your supposed to put it in light and fluffy.

Man.. you might not like what I have to say here...

Even slightly packed jars tend to take up long time and effect fruiting significantly IMO. You might not get any colonization inside if you really packed it. But at least contam would have hard time getting through the surface colony. But your fruiting will be very poor, if any, very very slow to colonize and fruit.

Of course, all this is just what I think from various experiences... So, if I were you, I'd start a whole new set of jars to call your first grow and keep the ones you have in a dark warm place for couple of weeks before peeking on them. Sort of hope for fruits but don't expect a miracle from them...

Good luck, though.

Sam

Yea, sam's right, don't pack.

When I make up my jars I just dump the substrate in the jars and leave it how it falls in there.  Airy substrate is key to quick colonization.

If you're doing BRF cakes, just carefully wipe the excess off where your dry verm layer will go, take care to not pack your substrate at all.

A month? Are you kidding me? I'd throw my jars away after 1 week(though I'd recommend a waiting upto 2 to 3 weeks depending on temp). Waste of jar space.

If you actually waited a month for germinate, you are beyond patient and somewhat foolishly hopeful.

True some spores are picky, but it only takes 2 right spores to germinate. And even if you had no other spore pairings, you'd should have that myc grow enough to be seen within 2 weeks. Jars can take more than a month to finish from innoc, but a month to see myc is being overly optimistic.

don't throw those cakes away if you can afford some more jars.  Just keep them in a corner of your incubator or just somewhere dark and warm for few weeks.  It's worth a shot to try to colonize them.

And are you guys mocking me?  Cuz if you are, you are all cut off!

J/K.  Thanx for the confidence Silven, MushroomFriend.

Is it just me or does anyone look at that name and see MushroomFiend sometimes?  But he's so nice and unFiendish.

Yeah my jars were definatly packed WAY too tight because when i opened them the substrate wouldn't come out. I had to get a fork and stab it. It came right out and held its shape! Thanks for all of the replies!!
