My friend says you can trip off Indian pipes. Those are the white symbiotic flowering plants that get food from roots of other things(they have no chlorophyll). He says that he's done it and it only works when they have this dark ring around the bulb. Does anyone know wtf he is talking about? Given this isn't even a fungus..
however a little searching will turn up some references of Indian pipe having effects similar to opium (?!?), kind of interesting, but I wouldn't go eating a bunch to try it without knowing more than that...
Medical Uses: Both Native American healers and white doctors used this plant at least till the early twentieth century. The juice mixed with water was used as a wash for eye problems. This ophthalmic use was apparently quite common and thought highly effective. Sores on other tinder tissue were also treated with a solution. It was also considered a sedative and antispasmodic and so used to treat fits and convulsions such as occurs in epilepsy. It was considered a good substitute opium in many cases.
