Start off by making beads, pendants and marble. You'll get a feel for the glass and how to make interesting color combinations and decorations and such. After you're comfortable with the glass making smaller simpler items, you'll be beter prepared for making pieces. And don't be upset if your first pieces aren't that great either.... practice!

You're not going to blow yourself up on one little torch
Like Gr8fulJ said, start out small and don't be upset when your first few pieces don't turn out. Use lots of clear and cheap glass in the beginning and work your way up to the expensive stuff when you are more confident with your hands. Always remember not to stare in to that flame for too long! Your eyes are precious, take lots of little breaks.
Another hint is to get a big terra cotta tray (the kind that fits under the terra cotta pots for plants, at any local garden store... or you could use a pot too). The bigger the better, and fill it with vermiculite. Put your beads in the verm so that they cool down slowly when you're done with them.
Best of luck, and congrats on your set! I expect to see lots for trade here on the forums

I wont be lamp working but I found a buddy thats going to be my partner using a glory hole. I never met him but I had a couple cases of glass tubes for sale. ANd a friend of mine told him about my glass. So we got talkin and now for 150 for a whole day we get to do all we want in the shop. Use all the glass we can and use his kilms for a simple flat rate. Not bad in my opion all day equals a lot of stuff. Probably going to see him this weekend for details.
Well man have fun with the torch. Its a good good good hobby and a wonderful way of passing the time.

dont even think about doing anything if you dont have super good ventalation and a pair of glasses....
if you follow the code of glassblowing, you cannot moraly sell anything not put in the kiln to cool properly.... i havent tried the vermiculite trick, but i heard if ypu put verm in a crock pot, then crank it up, you can get away with beads like that.
dont use lots of color, it's hella expensive to learn that way.
oh, and remember the first rule: "Glassblowers get burned" and dont be supprised if you loose some fingerprints for awhile on a 3rd degree surface burn it sucks

Verm in a crockpot on high will work. Anoher workable method is using an old coffee can filled with verm, placed on a hotplate. Those methods will suffice for small beads and marbles, but once you start making heady pieces they should definately be annealed.
neodynium (sp?) glasses are a must!

as for the annealing, im going to Ring of fire glassowrks tomorrow to get some tubing, and im going to try and work out a deal with one of the guys there to use the kiln that they have. i have some glasses, and shades (level 5 tint) to go over them which are equivelent to a pair of boroscopes, i value my eyes quite a bit.
the things i am concerned aobut are my ventilation and my propane. i have a 20lb grill tank the i am going to be using in my room in my appartment, which has 3 other people living in it. apparently it is illegal to have it in the house, but i have flashback arrestors, to prevent explosion, and the tank will be kept on the balcony when not in use.
as for ventilation, ihave a box fan in my window, and the rest of the window taped off with plastic and cardboard, i did the incense test and as long as i have my door open i have good ventilation, i am however concerned about the other apartment buiolding in the vacinity. noone has their windows open as it is very cold outside, but im still wondering how toxic my emissions might be to the other people in the neighborhood.

yea, a hood is ideal, however, for fuming, i've heard from a lot of people that the fumes dont get sucked up, they stay toward the bottom, and that ventalation that sucks the air straight is better.
i know the type of glasses your getting, the rose didium, you should definetly get a pair of the clip on shade 5's for $35 from frantz. http://www.frantzartglass.com/Itemdesc.a...=153005&Tp= (ok, i was wrong, only $18)...
but see the comments "if you arent using a proper pair of glasses... temp... replace periodicaly..."

1 Phillips - Large Economy Plastic Frame $40.00 $40.00 Phillips202 $40.00 1 Plastic Clip-On/Flip-Up Shade $20.00 $20.00 Shade #5
those are my glasses, and im pretty sure that they are top notch. i was very concerned about my eyes and when talking to the owner of the shop i purchased from i was sure to explain that in detail. hence my buying better glasses than rose iddiums.
