Yeah, the cristate is a T. Pachanoi. Though you can't really see them all these cacti put out just over 100 pups for me this year, So, I'll be doing some more potting next year.

Thanks everyone. I water every 2-3 days, 3x fertilizer then once with water. Rinse and repeat if you will. The largest one I'm sure is over 10 years old, I was fortunate enough to get it when it was already good sized. The tabs are labels yes, but I believe that all the T. Pach are the Backeburg clone. The labels do identify cuttings taken from other cacti though, so if I discover any differences I can track them.

Gr0wer, I was kinda lazy this year in that I only foliar fed them twice. For the most part I used miracle-gro at full strength with a pinch of dolomite lime per 5 gallon bucket of water, I gave em a good dose of micronutrients at the beginning of the grow season and I also used GH maxibloom occasionally. It has a decent formula for cacti, but I was using miracle-gro most of the time for the higher N content to try to encourage pupping. The profuseness of base pups on some of them I attribute to a couple things... larger cuttings, lots of water and nutes and lots of sunshine. My idea was that by using 16-18" cuttings and feeding them slightly heavy they would produce plant sugars faster than an individual growth tip would be able to use, in essence forcing the cacti to pup to use the energy it was producing. The type of feeding I did is really aggressive for cacti and would result in serious problems if the soil pH was off or if my soil wasn't aerated enough or if I kept N levels too high for too long. I wouldn't recommend that folks new to cacti push their cacti quite this hard. Hope that helps.

Just another question if I may.
Does your growing medium have any nutrient value other than what you feed it with?

Thanks everyone for the kind words, sorry I been out of town. Faslimy, both the topsoil and composted manure contain some nutrients and the cacti would do fine without additional feeding, I was just trying to push the envelope and see what was possible. I don't think that I will feed them quite as heavy next year.

Good lighting keeps them growing vertical and horizontal, almost all cacti that i've seen skinny at one point in their growth is due to insufficient lighting.
As to the actual mechanism i'd say it's inhibited cork cambium growth, but I'm not sure if you call it cambium in (or even cork cambium) in cacti. M_S?

Cacti will get thinner when they are growing but don't have enough light. I took some cuttings before the season started and let them callous. Took them out of the shed a week or so after it had warmed up enough for growth to start. Doh! Slacker!

Usually it's when they are given adequate warmth, light and water during the dormancy period. They will grow weak etiolated segments which can snap under the weight of future growth.

The temperature is the main issue, it's what induces dormancy. If the cacti are in a warm enough environment they will grow. In which case they need adequate water and light. If they are not growing water may cause rot, light won't make much difference if they aren't growing. You can skip dormancy altogether if you want to provide strong artificial light.

Maverik, I have just got myself a glasshouse and have put what cacti I have in there until my seedlings are big enough. It's early Summer where I live and I'm fairly new to growing. In my city it averages 10C during the midwinter so the glasshouse would be i'm guessing around 15-20. Even without watering I take it that they will develope weak etiolated growth during this period?
I need to look into non electrical ways of cooling the glasshouse in winter.

faslimy, I would say under 15C / 59f they will probably not be growing. What I notice here is that once it stays below 60-65F outside they pretty much stop growing for the year. You don't need to worry about cooling them down any. If they are growing water em once they stop let em dry out. Mine stay outside all winter, I just have to make sure that the soil doesnt get super waterlogged for several days at a time.
