Trying to save a jar or two through casing... Danger?
    #3343024 - 11/10/04 07:50 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

Well my buddy ended up having a few more contamed jars than he thought he was going to. I guess chalk it up to being a noob, and he also thinks too long a colonization period. Maybe not high enough temps.

He opened a few jars that were otherwise fully colonized but that also had some small signs of contam. About quater sized areas in each. He cut out the contam area and decided to try and case all the good looking myc to see what would happen. After just a few days, the casing shows beautiful ryzo growth....

Here is the question... Is this casing, with its contam free myc growth, a safe platform for growing shrooms to eat? Or is it a lost cause due to the contam that was in the jar.

Is it safe or should he toss it?

Veteran mycologists please contribute on this...

I'm as new as you but I have read that the myc sucks up nutrients from everything including possibly toxins from the contam or surrounding area of the contam. It's risky business.

I'm really interested to hear from knowledgeable growers if this is possible and safe.

Give some more input guys and gals...
