Great quote.

Really hits home with me, as I'm (what I consider to be) a talented musician without the persistance necessary to take it somewhere.

I'm working on that part.

How many failed attempts = persistence and how many failed attempts = stubborness?

If what one is doing is not working do you persist or do you change tactics?

For example: when one is attempting to sledge hammer a boulder open, one can see no progress from each strike though the interior is weakening and suddenly one strike can split it open. In other circumstances no progress is apparent because there is no progress.

The proof is in the pudding.

"Nothing rules"

So does absolutely nothing rule absolutely?

Stepping back, re-evaluating, and possibly changing angles is not admitting defeat, it's simply rethinking your tactics.

I think the described feat can co-exist with persistence.

Why do you mention "persist" and "change tactics" as if they are opposites?

"How many failed attempts = persistence and how many failed attempts = stubborness?"

good question, what is the differance between persistance and stubbornness?

maybe stubborness is when you keep doing something even if it is not beneficial to you and persistance is when you keep doing something that is?

I think that stubbornness is persistance without re-evaluation.

Swami added something vital.

My hubby is the persistant one and yes, it's paid for him big time. But that in itself isn't always enough. I'm the one who can feel out when its time to change tactics and to what. The two qualities combined make shit happen.

We started up a tour boaut bussines and retail store in the carribean years back under capitalised. The originating idea was to not step on the established big boys toes and to come up with an innovative tour cattering to an unsatisfied market. We went the eco route with combo hiking/snorkeling trip. It got rave reviews, yet the lame sales agents on the island wern't pushing it and THEY loved it. As the dollars dwindled, I kept saying we gotta switch tours. Hubby beleived in the orginal idea and persistantly kept plowing forward with all he had.

Then we got hit with another bad blow, the 50% fule efficient outboards he was also persistant to stick with which kept blowing power heads due to the salt water, blew another head. We just couldn't afford the down time.

I put my FUCKEN foot down and said, we are going to get additional investment capital to buy carborated out boards, and sell those optimax crap and we are going to develope a new trip option and brochures with the last money we had. I put together a new trip, based on what people were calling in and asking for, which meant going head to head with the big boys, not what we thought they should want to do, got the boat back in the water and BAM!

We quickly went on to become the number one BVI tour boat operator for the resorts, went on to move into a larger retail space and order an additional boat to service demand, won a best tour of the year award from PRINCESS cruises, got over the million in revenues mark and sold the buss for a profit 3 years later.

Our persistance in itself wasn't enough, though it did get us the first and vital cruiseline contract. Had we not been will to change strategies and tactics or even thought to, we would've failed and gone bankrupt.

Persistance is vital and pays, sometimes all on its own and sometimes, it requires a change of strategy or approach or new direction all together. Knowing what that is and when it's time to call for a shift is another story.

I rely on intution.

Bingo.

My point exactly.

Re-evaluating the situation, and continuing on with the roller, is STILL an exercise of persistance.
