water droplets and aborts
    #3341814 - 11/10/04 03:35 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

My first (rather large) primordia appeared overnight, but only on 2 of 3 cakes.

I had a big problem with water droplets on my lid, for which I applied the vaseline trick, but it prevailed nonetheless.

Water may have dropped from the lid while closed, and it almost definitely did while opening/closing, and I'm worried this might have damaged my little cakes!

For some reason, now that the 2 have started growing mushrooms that problem has disappeared....

Any idea why, or if I've terrribly harmed them?

Bah, where's Sam when you need him.

I can't remember his exact explanation but I'll try to give you the jist of what I do remember.

Water condensing in your tub is not a sign of humidity.  It is simply a sign that the outside of the container is warmer (? or is it colder?) than the inside of the container so it forces the water to condense on things.

It's like putting a pop in the refridgerator and it won't really condense water droplets very badly, but if you take that biotch out on a hot day and stick it on your table it will sweat like a mofo ( pubbers would think I'm a tool) and you'll soon have a puddle of water at the bottom of the can and drops running down the side.

Maybe the temps in or out of your tub have come closer to balanced?

It shouldnt matter to get the water on your cakes a little bit. To much can cause problems if it keeps occuring. I just had to throw out a nice 4 quart grain casing because I didnt notice in my closet I have one spot that drips below after I spray and the areas that were getting dripped on were green. Mofucker didnt even give me a flush :frown: Oh ahwell.....

It's a sign that the air in your tub is warmer than the air in the room. The walls of the tub are slightly cooler than the air inside, so moisture condenses on the sides.

If I need to open the lid wide, I take it completely off and turn the lid vertical, causing all the water to run off onto the floor. Generally I can lift the lid slightly enough so that only a few drops fall, I don't really consider it a big problem.

I usually use a desk fan to fan instead of using the lid..

little water doesn't hurt. If you are worried, try fanning to dry some off. Maybe about 10-15 min of fanning. It's a workout to do it often, though.

Yeah, silven, you got it right on.

Never apply valseline or anything else on the sides.. only the lid.
I like candles wax. Just take a candle and start smearing it lightly on the inside of the lid. If the condensation persists, it's because of large difference in temp. You can try putting a blanket or something over it. But watch the temp if you do that.

Good luck

Sam

I was going to put a blanket on there, I was just a little worried about contams since I have kitties and there would almost undoubtedly be hair on said blanket. Any blanket. Such is the nature of having pets!

That might let some humidity out, too, though...

There probably is a 5 to 10 degree difference in temp.

By candle wax I assume you mean burn some down and then apply while still wet and liquid?

fixing the drip problem just takes a bit of common sense man, find some clear plastic or somthing and make a tent shape or something,, ive got my first shrooms growing right now in a totally improvised setup, a big bowl with wet perlite etc, and a clear plastic bag on top but in a slight vacuum with the bag pulled up in the centre so that it has two steep slopes on both sides, i think the cauum helps it to stay in this position.  The water just drips down the sides. The bowl sits on top of a heater and ive got as massive amount of shrooms appearing, dunno if this means i'l get a lot of aborts though because of the cake not being able to support the growth of all the shrooms, sorry bit off topic there, am just proud as fuck of my shrooms
