Air exchange in Incubation Tub
    #3340510 - 11/10/04 07:45 AM (19 years, 4 months ago)

Hello all,

How important is it to have airexchange in my incubation tub (in tub) ?
Now ive got it covered with a large garbage bag to keep it dark and to keep "dirty" air away...

It actually is a kind of humid in their now as well, any harm?

Thanks in advance....

during uncubation there is no need to have air circulation. You might want to think about putting that in a closet or something to keep light out.

Another reason to have air circulation is to keep the heat even thru out the tub.

i may be wrong but with a tub in tub you shouldn't need air circulation to distribute the heat evenly because the water does that for you. that's just what i got out of all the info on the TNT Ive read but i may be taking it wrong.

Hey KaptKid

You say "another" reason, which more reasons could there be?

About eveness of temp in the tub, I think it will vary a bit the tub is touched by the warm water at the bottom and only a little at the sides, so I think its warmer at the bottom of the tub, but then again warm air tends to go up..
So then I dont see the need of circulating air to even up the temp.

Correct me?

Thanks all for the replies!

The mycelium is going to need O2. If you seal your jars in a confined incubator and the jars produce too much co2, they're not going to be happy. I don't know how long it would take for them to use up all the oxygen in the various sizes of incubators out there, but I suspect that fanning out a TiT every day would be plenty.

Those things are likely to heat up the fresh air fast enough that the drop in temperature isn't goign to be a problem, and the (clean) fresh air is always a good idea.

thoughts?

you do not need air circulation in a tnt, thats just asking for contams.

if you push down hard enough on the tub that is in the tub, it will force water up the sides, and that will make even heat. just tie the handles down or the tub that's in the tub will just float on top and not have any water on the sides.

no water pump, no air circulation, you guys are really over thinking this allot.

its a kind a hard for the cakes, who are covered with alufoil with 4 holes which is covered with alufoil as well, to breath?

Since I am still testing and have to check the temperature and sometimes reset the heater I  did not tie the tubs tight together yet.

Hyphae, correct me if i am wronf, said that only the tub floating in the other is enough for incubation.

I calm myself with the thought that everything is cool, if 86F can be considerd that!

So I aint gonna change much, just keep the stuff covered, me checking the temp daily gives nore then enough fresh air.. And, unfortunately, also possible contams... :frown:

Thank you all!

I thought mycelium loves and thrives in c02. correct me if i am wrong. and if I'm not than there is no absolute need for air circulation, because the TNT does the tempt distributing for you so the c02 would be the only thing left but again if i am right than there's nothing to worry about.

Jars produce Co2, they need o2. Hense putting tyvek or polyfill over the hole in jars. --> Release of 02= Happy mycelium.

i do not cause any extra air exchange in my tnt than what happens when i open the lid to check on the jars.

the tub just floating in the other tub will work just fine, but i like to make the water displace up the sides so i can stack jars and everybody is eqaully warm instead of warm water only being on the bottom.

kykid, your right. thats why you do not need fresh air in your incubator.

Yeah slut, I can imagine me pushing the tub in deeper when I have more jars. Now only the bottom is filled.
Must be looking 4 another tub i guess cause in this one 10 pints fit...

Buttt for the time being it will do just fine!

Thanks 4 your tips.
