Will this pressure cooker work? (Pictures)
    #3339603 - 11/10/04 02:08 AM (12 years, 25 days ago)

My friend got two of these pressure cookers at wallmart for $60. They don't have any pressure gauge, and the weight on the top doesn't say if it is 15lbs. So will these pressure cookers work? And is it ok if the jars touch the sides of the cooker? Thanks... Here are some pictures of the pressure cookers.

Read the instructions.

I got my 10qt ELECTRIC PC for $60.  Very well written instructions with it.

What sort of jars though. PF Tek is fine with boiling alone but grain might not do so well at 10PSI. I'm sure it would be possible to use ok but doesn't seem optimal to me at all. You know you could get one off ebay for about 30 bucks that holds 9-10 quarts? I've gotten two so far and both work well, one seal is so-so but it still gets up to 15 PSI.

This should be another hardcore cultivator item...

I had that pressure cooker before. It will work fine for PF tek. Cook them for 70-90 minutes though, just to be sure. If you plan on doing grains, get the cheapest one you can that goes to 15psi.

Ok, I apologize. I looked through it again and found that it operates at 12psi. Is this enough to kill the bacterial endospores in rye? Thanks...

Look up the company's website online and check for your model of PC, it should indicate there. (If they have a website, I'm sure they do though)

12 pci should be fine, its only a matter of 6 degrees difference. It should work good man. I'd cook for at least 1.5 hours though.

Thats awesome - thanks derx. Where did you find out that there is a 6 degree difference? Is there some kind of chart online somewhere? Hope this post is useful to people needing pressure cookers. It was pretty cheap - and wally world has a smaller one that is only 20 U.S. dollars.

I looked on the gauge of my AA. But the PSI to temperature relationship is directly proportional.

in what units?

psi:ferenheit
Pa:celcius?

or just generally? higher the pressure, higher the temperature.

the units don't matter, it's a linear scale either way. directly proportionally means higher the presure, higher the temperature if everything else is held constant.

Ok, well to put this thread to rest I've done alot of research about this now and found - that pressure cooker operates at 12 psi. Although you can test to see if it is hot enough by putting a drop of water on the lid of the cooker, if the water immediately boils and turn to vapor - your pressure cooker is hot enough. 15 psi is irrelevant.
