Any hope for this batch of straw?
    #3339426 - 11/10/04 12:25 AM (12 years, 1 month ago)

A mini-bale of straw was broken up and had pre-soaked and then I was heating up my high-tech pasteurization vessel, a.k.a. pressure cooker with the lid off, and everything was going fine.  Then I left to run an errand and I returned to find that the thermometer in the straw reading about 200 F.  Is this batch doomed to bacterial infection, or could I say, repasteurize it at proper temperatures or use bleach?  I'd be really thankful for any help.

I've had no problems when boiling straw for over one hour, although I've only tried it for maybe five times. I'd say give it a shot, and report the results.

Same here - I also have boiled the straw once by accident and the mushrooms grew in spite of that ...

Thanks to both of you, that is very reassuring. I will stuff some bags full of straw and oyster spawn now, and I'll try to get some pictures of results.

Now all I have to do is clean the pillowcase of fine straw particles and the browning that straw-water leaves, yippee.
