First Signs Of Colonization***(New Pics)***
    #3336664 - 11/09/04 09:51 AM (19 years, 4 months ago)

This is the first jar to colonize.

Its still kinda small, but Im sure you can see it, just please dont tell me its contam(I doubt it is).  And here the same jar, on the opposite side.

Once again, its kinda hard to see.  Its towards the top of the jar, just a little patch, but its there.

oh man.. that looks like uglies...  j/k

Good job so far... but....

I see those jars are pretty packed...  something you can improve next time for faster colonization. using coarse verm will help you not pack.

Sam

Here are jars only slightly packed before PC.

They are Golden Teacher. Actually, its weird, that jar is one of the tighter packed jars. The other loose ones are just starting to colonize as we speak. Also, think it might be taking longer if I inoculated the jars a little pit away from the edges of the substrate?

GT is supposed to be a little picky about who they mate with... germination can take a little time. Lightly packed ones grow faster because there's more room to grow through. Remember that they have to grow inside as well. Also having air pockets help as gas reservoirs.

For 4 site inoculation, stick the needle on the glass surface. It'll help distribute the spore solution over a larger area. .5cc inoculation is standard... but I think 1cc inoculation does make a considerable difference because it covers a lot more area.

Next time, I suggest you do fluff and don't pack. No biggie... only a week or two difference IMO.

When you say 1cc, do you mean 1cc per jar, or 1cc per inoculation point?
Also, does the strength of the mycelium differ when packed or fluffed?
One more thing, I hear GT's are good fruiters, will casing bring in a good yeild?

1cc per site. GTs for me have been great for cakes and casing.
Each cake about 150g wet for first and second. Over 3 flushes(that's all I keep them for) about 380g wet on the average now.

Casings... 3 cake casings are about a pound per flush.
I think casings would be better for most people because I really take care of my cakes to make sure they have enough water.

Strength of mycelium? I don't understand... I have a hypothesis on getting most out of cakes, which involve colonization time, but I don't have a good procedure to test the hypothesis, yet. Loosely packed jars colonize faster in general.

Sam

I've posted these pictures before, but take a look. The casing container is 11" long.

It's from a 270ml jar. Basically same as 1/2 pint. Yields have gotten better since that pic, but by bulkier stems. That was definitely the prettiest cake flush, though. That was second flush, first was 130g wet.

Sam...you really need to make a tek on how you get those monster flushes. I have never seen cakes like that.

I think Hyphae needs to do that. But I think some of us might get tired of giving contradicting(but newer and better) procedures with PF tek and will end up writing up an updated Tek. But there's no way I'm doing it by myself. If it happens, it'll have to be circulated through some big names, first.

EuphoricDisaster, sorry for thread hijacking.
