I am done with PF and BRF, lookin for opinions on grain(rye)
    #3337833 - 11/09/04 05:13 PM (13 years, 11 days ago)

I really wish I had just started off with grain, but unfortunately I did not.

Anyway, I am going to do my next batch with rye and was just wantin to get some opinions on what method works well and that is relatively simply. I am looking to produce bulk quantities as well.

Also, is there a way I can use my PF jars as spawn for grain? I am still a rookie, so all help is appreciated.

I have read several teks, just still unsure as to which way I want to go.

Thanks in advance!

In theory, you could take a section of brf cake and trasfer to a jar of rye a la grain to grain transfer, but you'd need a VERY clean working enviroment. AFA rye I've never used it.

Take a print and make a liquid culture. Karo tek is one good method.

You'll want to use quart jars. Not very picky with qt jars unlike PF jars. They can be tapered or with fat lips. Doesn't matter. Magash has a great rye tek. See if you can search for it. If not, I'll help you find it. I use a couple of rye casings right now. I think they are great. Yield is slightly more than my 3 pf cake casings, though. That's from about 2/3 qt of rye.

You'll also want a PC unless you are going to go through pain of partial sterilization.

I think you'll like rye. I think it provides better yield for most people. The longevity would also be longer.

Anyways, good luck

Sam

So, what would my chances of getting sterile grain jars be using partial if I went through the 3 days of boiling. Has anyone had experience with it and resulted in success?

I'd say not good, but honestly thats a guess. conventional wisdom is that the pc is the only thing that gets the grains hot enough. it's a question of time and heat, not just time.

Theory is that you kill off most contam, and give time for endospores to germinate and kill them off and repeating it.  Endospores aren't killed at 212F boiling temperature.

I would advise you to get a PC.  It even works well with PF jars.

Sam, just curious whats the average yield of you 3 pf cake casing, just wanting to compare because i use 3 in mine and your way ahead of me so i was just wondering how far behind i am. i get around 16-20 dry grams first flush and that's my good ones.
