Pics to share
    #3337675 - 11/09/04 04:38 PM (12 years, 27 days ago)

I figured you all might like to see some pics from a beginner grower! I innoculted on Oct 25th, and so far 3 of my 5 jars have shown growth. Theyre in a colder than normal temperature range, so the growth is slow, but I thought you might like to see my progression so far. Any comments?

Hope everything goes well for you!

you should try to get them in higher temps...thats gonna take a month or so to colonize at that rate!

wrap em in a box in a towel near a heater or computer or something!

otherwise hip hip haray!

Sorry, Punkgod. But you are making a strong example for me.

Hey, everyone! see the jars? Those are really packed. It's harder to not pack when you use fine verm. Those jars will take 1-2 weeks longer to colonize than fluffy jars made with coarse verm. You can use fine verm, but you really really have to make an effort fluffy it up before you load them. Coarse verm makes it a lot easier to load lightly.

My average time is 9-11 days for 270ml jars consistently. That's from Multispore injection(MSI).

I really hope it doesn't take you 3 weeks, but from the looks of it, I'm guessing that's what it'll be.

Good luck!

Sam

I'm growing B+ in 1/2 pint jars with BRF. Starting simple until I learn more about the process.

I wasnt aware that verm came in different consistencies, but I guess now I'll be on the lookout for some more course stuff! You're right, its hard to keep it fluffy. I tried my best when I put the stuff in, but no matter how loosely I dumped it in, it still took up a lot of space. If it takes 3 weeks or longer it will still be worth it. It's a learning experience, next time I will know what I can do better. Thanks for your advice though, I really appreciate it. If anyone else has advice or comments please post them

Here's what they should look like before you sterilize them.

This is little more verm than max fruiting formula...

For recipe, stay with max fruiting formula.

1/4 cup BRF
1/2 cup verm
60cc water. It would feel a little dry but that's how it's supposed to feel... It'll look different after you cook it.

Sam

This is from a post I made earlier regarding verm...

Quote:

hmm.. guess I better clarify... verm grade is kind of mixed.. they aren't very uniform... I'll post some pics later as to what's what.

3/4" average are sold as super coarse grade, Scatmanrav.

Again, I'll post some pics later.. .it's late right now.

This is how I would classify them.

All <1mm - superfine. Used for specific grow condition to hold extra water.
Avg <1mm - fine. It's used for same as superfine, but the irregularity in size is a lot more. You'll see quite a few chunks 1-2mm big.
1-4mm -medium. Mostly used by nurseries for seedlings.
9mm+- coarse. Used for soil mixtures for plants prone to root rot. This is the stuff newbies should start with.
There are really really big chunky stuff called super coarse. You'd want to stay clear of them.

Defining grades is fairly standardized in the industry. But because a bag of verm has varying sized verm, sometimes I call them with 2 grades.

Medium/fine for more medium with good mix of fine stuff.
Medium/coarse for more medium with good mix of coarse.
coarse/medium for more coarse with good mix of medium.
etc...

I recommend coarse/medium over and over again becasue you can shake the bag and get the coarse stuff from the top. Flip the bag and shake, and you can get the medium stuff out and grind them up.

My jars look very similar and it is a bit cool I think as well. Plan to put on a heating pad in a water bath or with some buffer- How long should a jar take to colonize once you see it starting on the edges?

depends a lot of things, still... asssume around 3 weeks. That way you don't get disappointed.
