End Voter Privacy!?!?!

Hanging Chads, spoilage votes, absentee ballots going uncounted...it goes on and on, ripe w/ contraversy b/c the voting system is flawed.
How do we change this? how do we ensure EVERY VOTE is counted, and only one person votes one time?
I call for an end to voter privacy. think about it...you go to the polling place with two forms of official ID. you pick up a numbered ballot (or an ID# for using CP aided voting technology). you vote, you submit and you get an official printout that states for the record:
who you are (to make sure no one votes twice using your name) who you voted for Ballot Number and that YOUR VOTE WAS COUNTED at such and such hour and minute of Nov. 2nd
Im sure that some of you out there will say that voter privacy is a concern b/c the government shouldnt know who you voted for. But, for the life of me, I cant think of a reason how the government could use the knowledge of my voting record against me. Maybe someone could help me figure out why i should fear the gov's knowledge. Maybe the voting record could be destroyed a week after all votes were counted and a politician was officially elected?
and i say this because, on a public (or social) level, I know who almost all my friends/family/coworkers voted for anyways... political yard signs, bumperstickers, t-shirts, honk for kerry idiots out on the street corners, exit polling... people are allowing themselves to become free adrvertising billboardsfor one side or the other--they're willfully doing so.
I dont see yard signs that say "Im a convicted felon, Im on welfare, Im a recovering addict" on their lawn, so it seems to me that privacy re: ones choice for political office has gone out of fashion.
also, end privatization of voting methods (i.e. DIEBOLD) why cant the government create a bipartisan dept. that creates uniform ballots and voting procedure??? why must it contract ballot production methods to corps. who might have a political agenda??? If it costs more to do so, i dont care....I'll pay the extra price to ensure the basic tennet of democracy remains untainted.
I ask all this becuase when i read threads in this forum its always fraud this and stolen election that, but i hear no ideas presented to change the way americans vote.

If voting worked, it would be illegal.

I think they should have a number for each ballot so you could make sure it's counted, but I don't see why you need to have your name on there.

Why don't these electronic voting machines create and print out a paper copy of your ballot that you hand to someone. This solves the problems of 1) confusing written paper ballots, 2) no paper trail, and 3) faulty computers. It would take a little longer to count votes, but it would solve all these issues. The number of ballots would obviously then have to match up with the number of voter signatures recorded at the poll.

This is not the only reason for voter privacy.
If you could prove who you voted for, or if a corrupt politician had access to voter records with associated identification, votes could be purchased. Why spend hundreds of dollars per voter on TV adds when you can cut out the middle man?
Also, the way the gov't is now, it wouldn't hurt too much for somebody in government to know who you voted for. However, if a corrupt, vote-buying politician with access to voting records came to power, he could punish those who vote against him. Private armies and 99% majorities for brutal dictators in open elections might seem to be exclusive to the third world, but it is possible that they could become standard practice here, with enough bad decisions and bad luck.
Voter privacy doesn't seem that important now because we have a fairly good system and relatively ethical leaders (I know, i'm just asking for it... ) However, ending voter privacy would be extremely dangerous because it would smooth the descent into ever less free politics.
There are ways to make our voting system more secure without sacrificing voter privacy. Using only voting systems that produce sound audit trails and encouraging private consumer groups to audit the vote would create a sound system.

Another reason for voter privacy is so your boss doesn't fire you for voting the wrong way.

True. I've heard that Herbert Hoover was one of the smartest presidents ever.
