Just curious, to anyone whose germinated Trichs before about how long before the first set of spines developed?

Trich spines start very very young. Maybe microscopic at first. So id say within a week , maybe at the point of germination though cause if they were microscopic we wouldnt be able to see them yet. But as the cactus grows so do the spines in thickness and legnth .

Well taking that into account I guess my question was, when do they first develope t their full size and clearly the 2nd spines are in development at the stage you mention

i dont know as this is my first time starting them from seed. but i had a side question. every one of my trichs when they were sprouting had little mini spines at the dirt. is tehre spine before cacti, macroscopocly? i would normally think roots but cacti roots arent like that.

Thats the first root hairs, i'm reluctant to mess with the initial root when it fails to penetrate the soil because those root hairs are so fragile and they absorb most of the water.
I'm so please with my recent batches of pachanoi and bridgesii, after burning them after germination week 2 they are fat and the spines are coming fast, doing about 20/4 light cycle shaded fluoro and window light.
Good germination also in Ferocactus stainesii, about 75% of all seeds germinated

Yes light burn, I have found with Trichs that they need a much stronger light for pre germination than post germination. So to ensure all my seeds germ I have to burn a few quick sprouters... they survive though. You should raise those bridgesii closer to your fluoros kada

I'm not sure if this is the right place... but since we're talking Trichs... any recommendations on good seed suppliers? I've gotten seed from Mesa and BBB. Bad luck from the Trich Bridg from BBB.

I had a lot lower germ rates with my bridgesii than all my others, too. From the other posts it seems like that is pretty common. What does everybody here use for a fungicide? I've been using a peroxide solution that's a little more dilute than what you would use for mushrooms with very good success. No signs of any cobweb or other nasties, and it hasn't appeared to do any harm to my cacti. I've been letting them get a tad sunburned on their very tips and as soon as the red is noticeable, moving them back to their normal strength light. This seems to stop my Lopho's from stretching, which I had problems with in the past.

I never use fungicide. I've always used potting soil with a little sand on top for them to germ in. The seedlings may show a horn shape on top at first. This is the seed leaves, some species you don't really see it. The spines seem to come a little later depending on the species. I have bridgesii, san pedro and peruvianus seeds for trade.

Do you sterilize your potting soil before you use it, or do you find that it is not necessary? Sand on top for the seeds to germ in makes a lot of sense. I've got a little experience but I'm still learning. You really seem to know your stuff and have a wide range of botanicals. Thanks for the advice.

Thanks, Lifenergy. No, I don't sterilise my potting soil. I just mix it with perlite to improve drainage. Sand is fairly clean so I put a thin layer on top of the soil. Makes it easier to see the seeds. Then I sprinkle a little more sand to cover the seeds, keep moist with plastic wrap over the top and wait for them to germ. Always give cactus seeds at least a month to germ. Sometimes they take up to 2 months or more. If you do have a problem with mold, neem oil should help.

for the record i didnt buy mine from bbb. i do it very similar to stonehenge ecept i use more sand in the mix and no sand layer on top.
i gave the pots a booster seat to get closer to the light, hope that helps. its only been 6 weeks but still everything else has at least ahad a couple seeds come.

I blasted my 2 trays of pachanoi and bridgesii with 2 direct fluoros and temperatures which got to 30C and have had roughly 75% germination. They were purchased from www.cactus-heaven.com I'll try get some pics in a couple of days.

Mine dont form spines right away, first there tall green bulbs then they split and many white hairy spines come from inside the V this.

hours? Nothing with my cactus hapens in hours, more like days if not weeks. I usually see teh split in 2-7 days then hairs 1-7 days later depending on how hard im pushing em. More light and ferts the faster they advance. Ive stalled my 5 torches in teh shade and backed off warering to keep em small for grafting. They split and didnt show spines for 1-2 weeks.
