Colonization problem?
    #3334998 - 11/08/04 11:50 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

I have a couple of PF jars that are STILL not colonizing completely.

The jars are like 90 - 95% done, but there are little chunks in the substrate that have clumped together and are no longer even attached to the rest of the colonized cake.

I can see in the gaps these chunks have created. I see mycelium growing deep into the cake, but it does not appear to be growing into these clumps. Several days have passed without any change.

Also, water has stained the edges of the mycelium(around the clumps and the bottom) and is making a brownish outline. Should I be concerned with this discoloration?

As for the colonization, should I continue to wait it out, or can I go ahead and birth these and then just remove the uncolonized clumps?

That brownish outline you're talking about sounds like a contam. that my friend had right now in his B+'s, sucks. But without a pic. it's hard to tell. And the clumps are probably dry or were overheated (if you boiled them wrong ect) or mayb e something else, if they're 90% colonized just take em out and see what's up, if you notice a funny odor THROW EM OUT, and don't sniff around to see, some bacterial spores can be Very dangerous to your health. I really think the brown outline is from the water...its only along edges where the cake turns. Not sure, but will definitely be on the lookout for any funny smells.

As for the clumps, they are actually VERY moist, like a little brf/verm ball of mud.

Even with a picture, it could be difficult to tell... Without one... I really should just keep my mouth shut. It could be contam or just spurts of growth... I can't tell you, but father time will.
