Humidity question
    #3334780 - 11/08/04 11:07 PM (12 years, 27 days ago)

As I speak my cakes are being dunked in the fridge. I plan on using a medium sized tupperware container for the fruiting chamber but I've run into a problem. I have absolutly no money so I can't buy the perlite I need for the proper humidification. I was considering using damp paper towels but I read that it could possibly increase the chance of contamination. Are there any free ways for me to get the right humidity or a method to sterilize the paper towels?
Thanks

I'd not use paper towels. If you can find an aquarium pump and a couple airstones, you can set up a couple mini bubbling buckets inside you chamber. This is what I've done and my RH is at 98-100%

Good Luck.

Don't use paper towel. If you are trying to get something going for your cakes for cheap, look for coke bottle Tek or just use a very tight sealing tupperware and make sure the cakes don't touch the bottom. You can spray often to keep raising the RH. You'll need to do it a lot though... maybe couple of hours.

I think Coke bottle Tek is a good way alternative considering your situation. It's in the growers guide...link below

Good luck.

In that tek it states that you could use a damp paper towel in the coke bottle. Also for the coke bottle method wouldnt the space be limited for the mushrooms to grow?

Damp paper towels are bad ideas and can definatly lead to contamination! While it may work to keep up humidity, its not worth the risk. With a coke bottle tek you only risk 1 cake though. Still spraying alone would be more suggested..perilite even more suggested.

You can do without the paper towel in coke bottle. Just use water and some aquarium gravel or something like that. Add a healthy dose of H2O2(few capfuls per 4oz water) to help fight contam. Good luck

Damn man, perlite's like $2.75 here and that gives me enough to do two of my fruiting chambers, though it takes a bag and a half to do my 50 gal tupperware.

Anyway, as everyone has said, don't use papertowel. IF you were to use papertowel at all.. I would have to say to put it in the microwave for atleast a few seconds and also add 1:10 peroxide (h2O2):water to the water you are using to make the paper towel damp.

Change your paper towel regularly if you use it. I'm definately not suggesting the paper towel, but if you go against what everyone says and do it, just giving some pointers I think would help.

Also, do you have any aquarium gravel or anything of the sort? I myself am not keen on the coke bottle tek either, but if that's all you can do.. you may have to begin it in a coke bottle and then transfer it to your grow chamber after you get the perlite.

If you have any of that porous soap bar, 100% volcanic rock that people use to scrub oil and what not off their hands, you may be able to break that up into chunks with a hammer, boil it in water, and then put it in your tank with some water (treat it like perlite) and it should do the trick as well.

Hmm.. running out of ideas, just hit me back on what materials you have to work with and we will figure something out.

Just remembered something... i saw a couple of kids pan handling so they can candy flip few weeks back. An hour or two at the subway station or freeway exit would get you $5, I think...

What is required for the right humidity? I thought it was a lot of surface area for the evaporation to take place. If thats the case would something like small pebbles lining the bottom of my tupperware work?

Actually some small pebbles might work.

You should take them and boil them in a pan for a while atleast, just to kill any sort of contamination they might have on them.

To cool them down just run them under clean tap water probably.

I would treat it like perlite if I were doing this and add 1 or 2" of small pebbles and then 1/4" or 1/2" of water depending on how deep your pebbles are.

If this knocks your humidity up where it needs to be, definately let us know and you might have a new humidity tek on your hands.

Good use of your knowledge IMO liquidism and best of luck to you man.

Aquarium gravels don't work.  80% humidity max at 75F.
