    #3334624 - 11/08/04 10:37 PM (12 years, 28 days ago)

alright,m so i had a few casings and jars sitting ona heating pad, wll i checked them today, and theyre really freakin hot. id say around 100 degrees hot. did this kill them? even if theyre nice n wet? the actual substrate didnt nearly feel that hot. the top vermiculite was probably 85 degrees or so.

am i fucked?

The FAQ say heat death will occur at 106F. I guess you should just wait and see.

May be dried out a bit...may want to dunk before birthing.

There is no way to tell if you killed it without seeing it. Even then, who knows. Recently saw the same thing happen and all is well. Mostly depends on how long they were there.
If it were me, I'd prepare to start over. Don't give up the fight until you have to though. Watch them for a few days and see if there is growth.

Also, how did you go about feeling the substrate? Depending on how you did that, you may have to worry about contamination.

My jars got up to 100 before due to my girlfriend being cold and turning up the heat on my water bed heater without thinking while i was asleep. They survived and are doing just fine.

Its probably going to be ok. Even if the heat got up to 100, the substrate most likly all didn't. Wait and see is the only way.

I was actually in the exact same situation. I had 12 jars incubating on a heating pad's highest setting inside a shoebox. A few days later I felt the bottoms and they almost burnt my hand they were so freakin' hot. However, there are signs of mycelium growth in almost every jar. Some even have a nice fluffy white patch the size of a dime. I turned the heat down to medium high so it won't get hurt when colonizing downwards in the jar though. I think that they'll be okay man. Also, today is only day 5 of incubation for me.

yeah i think everyone has gotten into the range once in a while. i've seen some heated with a pad at 100 for a hour or two and then in the 90s for even longer.

i think as long as its not for a full week at 110 or something extreme you'll be fine.

DUNK! When the jars are fully colonized, wait 1 week after every part of the jar is white (cept tops, where the verm layer is) Then birth the cake into a container full of h2o2/water (a mixture of 1 part (3%)h2o2, and 10 parts water) Weigh down the cake with a bowl or something so its fully submerged in the water. Leave it in the fridge for 24 hours and then put the cake into your terrarium.
