cover holes on jars?
    #3334080 - 11/08/04 08:17 PM (12 years, 27 days ago)

Using the standard PF Tek and 1/2 dry vermiculite on top and foil lids that have four holes from inoculation, should I have the holes covered with another piece of foil until birthing or not?

Various opinions on this I think. I would keep them covered with foil. Foil will not hinder air exchange and will help contams from floating through the holes.

I'd keep the foil on.

Yeah, you should. Try using tape or rubber band to keep the first layer(ones with holes) of foil tightly against the glass, and cover with second layer(you should've had a second layer from when you sterilized them) loosely on them to keep falling debris or water out.

Good luck

actually, I didnt have any covering over the double folded foil while sterilizing because there werent any holes yet.
I filled jars, put foil on, sterilized, then inoculated (thereby not having any holes until after sterilization). Wont this method work?

Just to be on the safe side, bake some foil at hottest temp for 15 min and use that foil to cover. Make sure you give foil enough time to cool in the oven. Good luck

I have found no difference when putting tape on or off as far as grains go. And I haven't really seen a diff with the cakes either. If you have 1/2 inch of dry vermaculite then you shouldn't need tape. But, I would use foil at least. And, I never baked my foil and have had no problems.

You know, if you really want to cover your holes, use bandaids.

They come pre-sterile and also allow for great air exchange.

This is for PF jars, if I'm reading correctly. Use foil. It's easy and cheap. Don't cover the holes. Just use the foil to cover loosely. First layer needs to make a good seal with glass, though.
