How long can Diffusa Lophophora and Williamsii Lophophora seeds stay viable?

I'm under the impression they can stay viable for years.

Really, that's good news. I remember reading somewhere that putting seeds in the refrigerator/freezer helps prolong the time a seed is viable.

Yeap. There's a swiss seed bank that vaccuum seals seeds in a bottle and throws them on ice.

Any idea on the approximate amount of time this has proven to be good for by them?

The thing that swiss seed bank does is pretty standard for long term storage.

The amount of time viability is ensured is variable because each seed is different. So in other words, I don't know.

I dont think cacti seeds dont last for that long, i would start to worry aroundd 2-3 years. I would just plant em now if you got em and in 1-5 years depending on if its grafted, you should have more seeds

Wow. I didn't know grafting will bring on flowering quickly. I suppose it makes sense.

From "Applications Of Genetics"

Quote:

Most seeds remain viable for at least 15 years if they are carefully dehyrated until only about 5% water remains (How you'd tell this outside of lab conditions I don't know)

Seeds that can withstand such dehydration are called  orthodox seeds. It is estimated that 80% of plant species have orthodox seeds.

In general the storage life of a seed is doubled with every reduction of 2% in the relative humidity or with every 5C reduction in temperature..

...

In 1982 a magnolia seed excavated from an ancient japanese settlement, and estimated to be 2000 years old, was germinated successfully.

Hope this helps.

I did some grafts this year on Opuntia to see if it will speed up flowering. From what I found, the Opuntia grafts should flower before anything else. Do a web search on grafting with Opuntia.

I should have put an "or" in between refrigerator and freezer instead of an "/" because now I have to ask a question about that? Would it be better to put it in the freezer, or is the freezer too cold for the seeds, and the temperature in the refrigerator would be better? Do I need to do anything special to the container holding the seeds, if I plant on keeping them for 4~5 months?

Now if this is true, how come they say not to put Papaver Somniferum (Opium Poppy) seeds in the ground in Autumn, but rather in the spring if you get winters where below zero is not uncommon. I mean, if the cold can, in a way, preserve seeds, then why in this case does it do the seed harm? Is it because they are not in air tight jars, but rather exposed to the elements. Does cold temperatures only help a select group of plant seeds, which include Diffusa Lophophora and Williamsii Lophophora.

P.S. Thanks for that snippet Jackal

It depends upon the water content of the seeds which is obviously difficult to tell. If the water content is higher than average then I'm pretty sure freezing them will kill them.

A method I always try to use is I try to imagine the harshest condidtions in a plants natural habitat, seeds are meant to be durable in their own habitat. I wouldn't freeze cacti seeds although admittedly some cactus get covered in snow at higher altitudes, but I would keep them cool/dry/dark therefore a fridge should be acceptable.

Not because of the seeds not standing the cold, but because of seedlings not being able to withstand the cold

In fact i think i heard somewhere that poppies germinate better if left in a freezer for a few days before sowing.

I think the fall sowing your talking about is for warm climates, ie. middle east, where they can get a few seasons in a year. If you sow seeds now in colder regions they'dd just sprout and die.
