Pyrex 6"x8"x 2" deep, good enough for casing?
    #3333047 - 11/08/04 01:24 PM (12 years, 30 days ago)

So I bought some really nice pyrex dishes that measure 6"x8" and are each 2" deep.. didn't really think about it too well I guess.

My question is, can I use 1/3 or 1/4" casing material under my substrate, or should it really be 1/2"?

I'm trying to save room to have a thicker substrate layer, and want atleast 1 1/2" substrate.  That would mean 1/4" on the bottom, and 1/4" on the top with casing material (coir/verm), will this be enough?

Should I cut my substrate level down to say 1 1/3" and use 1/3" on top and bottom, or do you suggest cutting the substrate thickness down even more?

Eventually I will buy deeper dishes to use, but these are the perfect length and width for my fruiting chambers.

As always, any help is appreciated

What would I honestly do? Find a deeper set of dishes. The funny thing is I did the exact same thing. When I first started I went to wallmart and bought all the materials I could find for my grow, cases included. I bought these awsome ones that would fit four in chamber and went home all excited. But when I learned they shouldnt be clear, I was pissed off. Soon after I found these gladware containers that were black base and clear topped. Been usin em sense, which in the end blew like 11.00 on the old ones.

Someone mentioned the other day about bread loaf pans. Like the ones you bake it in. They are usually really deep and made of metal. I was thinking how nice it would be to have really deep casing that was completely unreceptive to light. Might try them soon.

Anyway, just look around for a deeper dish. I like 2in substrates or more myself...maybe it uses more resources but the fruits are much bigger.

hey Silven, as you know Im relatively new to this, but Im pretty sure a crap load of people dont even use a bottom casing layer. you could do 1 1/2 or 1 3/4 substrate then without a problem. Im not sure how this effects yields, but I will be trying some straight cased wbs and rye both ways soon to see if the bottom layer is necissary or not. good luck brother

Yea I was thinking about that as well Beejay.  Since I have the cakes already colonized and dunking right now, I might just do two casings tonight with those cakes and then make sure to have deeper dishes for the next ones that should be ready in 4 or 5 days.

Thanks both of you for your input
