Casing Abnormality ?????
    #3332732 - 11/08/04 11:38 AM (12 years, 5 months ago)

OK. I did harvest a bunch from cakes this weekend, but I had made 2 of the cakes into casings. Well, the casings pinned and everything and are groowing some shrooms, but all of them have grown to be about 1-2 inches and are breaking veil at that size, as compared to the cakes shrooms that are at least 4-5 inches before breaking veil. Obviously I prob did something wrong as this is my first casing, but I'm not sure what. I just made 3 more casings out of my Orissas that I birthed this weekend, so if anyone could tell me what I screwed up with these "mini-me" casing shrooms, so that I don't repeat it on these new casings that would be great.

how deep are your casings?

I've got them in these aluminum loaf pans, straight verm casings, probably about 1 inch on the bottom and about 1/2 to 3/4 on top. I do have some that look normal, but then the little itty bitty things, barely an inch that grew and broke veil already. I did notice that those seemed to not be very firmly attached.

I think Seethe was more concerned with your substrate size rather then your casing layers. If the substrate between the casings is thin, then you can expect smaller fruits.

If you want larger fruits try a 2" deep substrate layer +. Do not exceed 6in.

How thick is your substrate?

i remember in the past that i harvested a 1st flush of a cake with lots of mature shrooms (open veil) which were not more than 2-3cm each. i got angry and threw away the casing. then i saw it was contaminated (even the smell was healthy)

Sorry. Brain dead today. It's about 1 inch. The new casings I just made are in smaller containers and are probably close to 2 inches. Maybe that was my prob then? I also noticed that these first casings with the "mini-me" seem to be growing mostly around the edges, very few in the middle, not even at all and I thought I was getting them really even when I did them.

My 1-cake casings grew lots and lots of small shrooms, quite a bit smaller than the shrooms from the cakes, but more of them, so I ended up ahead.

#1

#2

Got 78.75g off #1 and 60.7g off #2. Wet of course. The loaf pans are big, so a cake was only about 2/3" thick, maybe less.

Moisture could be the reason they are growing on the sides. This sounds like a classic example of proper birthing technique.

Think about a few things.

Did you incubate after the casing was constructed 1-3 days or until mycelium begins breaking through?

Did you patch the exposed spots and reincubate?

Did you cold shock after it was cased? 24hr in the fridge really kickstarts pinning.

Did you mist the casing on a regular basis? At least once per day.

Did you provide at least indirect light for an extended after the cake was placed in the fruiting chamber. I would hope at least 4 hours, and hopefully more.

If any of these are missing then it could explain a weak pin set and/or grow.

Also I think your 2in substrate will work better. One of the main reasons people dont like deep substrates is that it technically wastes sub that could be used in further casings, surface area being one of the determining factors of higher yeilds. IMO just make more substrate. Knock up more jars and make good deep casings. It will fruit better and for longer.

Yes to every question except the cold shock, did not think to do that with the casings.

I've found substrate mass to be directly proportional to yield
not just surface area but weight of dry substrate per square ft of cropping area

I've heard not to coldshock with 2nd or 3rd flushes on casings. Does this hold true to cakes as well?

I think cold shocking a cake after every flush is a great idea but probably unnecessary. You wont be fruiting most cakes or casings much further then the third flush usually, but for the first three I might.
