Casing - Best Substrate?
    #3332443 - 11/08/04 08:34 AM (12 years, 27 days ago)

Ok, so what is YOUR personal favorite substrate to case with?

Ex.  Rye grain, popcorn, birdseed, etc.

In your experiences does YOUR personal favorite substrate colonize quicker than others?

Does it maybe crumble easier making casing a lot easier?

Maybe it's more nutricious for the mycelium than the other substrates?

Please include some information as to why it's your substrate of choice, I'm looking at some options today

By the way, bought myself a pressure cooker, two new terrariums, tons of perlite/verm, and a few other handy things that totalled up to $150 last night, Walmart was thankful.

Hey Silven, my experimentation with grains is just beggining. I have started with both wbs and rye berries. As the teks say, I soaked, simmered, and pc'd. My jars arent fully colonized yet, but one thing is apparent right away. The rye is colonizing like 10 times faster literally. I also felt that the rye was a little less messy in the kitchen. Just my limited take on thtings thus far. Congrats on the new aquisitions too. Its always nice to have new toys.

They're all fast and easy. Rye is my fav because it's cheap and has been fastest for me. I use 70/30 coir/verm.

Seems like it's pretty much unanimous.

Up until now it's been brown rice flour for me, and I have read a lot on rye, now I know it's rye I will be using.

Also, I planned on casing with the coir/verm as well.

I know people use 50/50, 60/40, 70/30, and 40/60 regularly.

Has anyone noticed any major difference in size of fruits or anything outstanding by using different ratios of coir to verm?

I appreciate all the feedback you have all given me!

Note:

SCIOpenEyedDream your avatar is great

Hey Silven,

Now that I see this about rye I was wondering something. Since I always thought rye is a grain, but now I read about rye-berries??
What is the difference, if any?

Tia,
MF

I like using grain for spawn to straw
wether it be wbs, corn, ryeberries or popcorn

pasterized straw seems easy for me. Colonizes quickly (about a week)
just loves to produce fruits, seems hard to contam

Yea straw has been something I've had my eye on as well noxy.

Those large straw logs in particular. I was wanting to produce a 5 or 8' long log with a diameter of 6 to 10 inches. I think the yield (granted it didn't contam) would be absolutely amazing. Have heard nothing but good about straw.

1. Rye Berries are Rye grain. Its larger then Rye seeds. Both whole grain rye and Rye Berries are the same thing under different trade names.

Hey Kido!

I am confused, Rye berries, Rye grain AND Rye Seed! I looked the word Rye up ofcourse some time ago, and in Dutch it would be "rogge".
Sometimes they make bread out of it which is rather dark.

I bought it some eko-rye last week, and it is like the seeds/grain.

But what is difference between the seed and the grain?

Thanks.. :frown:
