the other night my housemates and I had a well-known Ohioan jam band, Peach Melba, come play up on our farmhouse. they played right on our front porch. it cost us $400 for the band, another $200 for the sound man, and another $300 for a few kegs of good beer. we had another local band from Athens play too. our neighbors (we share communal land) also had a party that night for the graduating seniors at the college they attend. they're a much different crowd (typical "rednecks"), and had the biggest bonfire and pork roast I've ever seen. we had some 400 people up on our land. everyone believed "it couldn't be done" - our neighbors told us it would be a bad idea, that two different parties on 1 hill would get out of hand, that the band would be too loud, that parties are against our lease rules, that it would get shut down, that some drunk tarzan impersonator would get killed on our "Swing of Death" we advertised on flyers (we have a rope swing some 20 yards into our woods tied to a treeside that goes off a 30 foot drop, launching you some 80 feet through the air). our landlord found out about it (it was advertised over our answering machine) and said that he didn't want it happening, that he didn't want a bunch of kids tearing up his land (it ended up raining pretty hard for a portion of the night, and with 100 cars parked in our yard, it did turn into a mudpit!). some of our parent said that we'd be responsible if somebody got into a car wreck after getting drunk at our house. it doesn't make sense- left and right and left and right, mechanical anxiety feeding off one another and intensifying one anothers paranoia. and i'll tell you what, it was nonsense! absolute nonsense! didn't make a damn bit of sense! but we did it anyways, because it was _fun_. 400 people came and got totally soaked-sopping wet from the rain, a little bit drunk and high, and grooved out to one of the best jam bands around. after it rained i ran around barefoot through the woods squishing the mud into my toes to go off the rope-swing while on acid and see this beautiful rainbow while air born. i got myself covered in mud trying to make it up the hill. Peach Melba came on, my trip peaked, and I was so happy to lend my head over to them and participate in such a great free source of free-flowing energy - there were so many folks there who were ready to tune into it and shed away their false, mechanical ego. the synchronicity i was experiencing from being in tune with the band and the crowd put me totally out of my head into a much better mental space. i'm very grateful to everyone who came and made it happen. wasn't it Leary who said "you have to go out of your head to use your mind"? he's absolutely right. cosmic oneness, group consciousness - it lies beyond sense, it's a mental space where everything is in synchronicity. on acid, listening and watching these lush sounds of a bass, 2 guitars, a drummer and percussionist all communicating with one another carressing, i could hear each sound and see each member perform each sound and understand how the sounds were communicating with one another, while hundreds of other kids tuned in to the same thing - it just would carress my mind, my limbs took on a life of their own and danced about. one's divine nature is released in such moments of synchronicity. it's where your true intellect lies, not in "sense"........ hot damn. have i made any.... sense? peace

Mindfulness is the aware, balanced acceptance of the present experience. It isn't more complicated than that. It is opening to or recieving the present moment, pleasant or unpleasant, just as it is, without either clinging to it or rejecting it.
