if you know anything about huxley you will know he came from a highly gifted lineage... his uncle on his mothers side was a great writer and his grandfather was thomas henry huxley, one of the few early scientists to support darwins theory of evolution.

huxley says his aim in writing brave new world was to "arrive at a perfect fusion of the novel and the essay". he did not set it out to be a super-riveting page-turner, but a self-described "ideas novel"

that is all it is good for anyway, its ideas! ever read chrome yellow? now THERE is some over-detailed detail :)

oh and for me the life changing book was; quantum psychology - robert anton wilson, wouldn't be here now without him!

Ishmael, by Daniel Quinn, completely changed my view on society and our race. EVERYONE needs to read this book. I strongly recommend it, its a quick read and mind opening.

For me... not so much books as movies and music, just because these are more entertaining and I watched/listened for pleasure, not expecting to have my mind opened, but they were........ummmmm............
The Matrix, I know it sounds stupid, but all things considered this movie is really what got the ball rolling for me, without this movie I might not have been able to have changed the most basic ways I think. It let me realize that even the most simple, and given things aren't necessarily(sp?) true, and that I could be wrong about ANYTHING because if life really WAS just messages sent to the brain, there would be no way of me knowing. This got me thinking "What else do I just take for granted that could be COMPLETELY wrong"
Stanley Kubrik Movies, they just made me think, plus they led me to other things, which indirectly opened my mind
AKIRA, you just gotta see this one.
And as far as music....
TOOL, THE major catalyst for me, the messages in their songs, and the things that I found out they were interested in. Their music changed my views in a very short amount of time.
But, if I hadn't decided to dedicate my life for a while to LEARNING then I wouldn't have ever reached this state of, well... Bliss, for lack of a better word, I think it's because I've begun to look at things in a new way...............
and without the use of halucinogens, as of yet.

The Way of Zen by Alan Watts was my first mind rearranger, although believe it or not, the very first book on magical world view that took me out of a scientific materialism was [embarrassingly] The Satanic Bible by Anton Szandor LaVey.
Anyway...The Electric Acid Kool-Aid Test by Wolff, and then there was the memorable winter break in 1973 that I spent with a bunch of yellow and blue microdots in my room, reading Evelyn Underhill's Mysticism and Lama Govinda's Foundations of Tibetan Mysticism. Of course, those books followed in the wake of my discovery of BE HERE NOW, handed to me by a college friend during a difficult acid trip. Paramahansa Yogananda's Autobiography of a Yogi was the last book I read in college, along with a paperback New Testament. It helped bridge the gap to the Bible as a whole (which led me to 2 years in a Methodist seminary). I immersed myself in Jung from seminary, through grad school, through analysis to application for Jungian analytical training (but was not accepted, and it took 6 years to understand why and the cult dynamics training now possessed). Stan Groff's books have been very important to me (as he definitely understands the nature of my most life-changing psychedelic experiences.) After him, Ken Wilber's books, and most recently John Shelby Spong's Liberating the Gospels: Reading the Bible with Jewish Eyes, absolutely blew the mind I had constructed over the past 23 years following seminary. For good or ill, I am now studying Vajrayana Buddhism again, have purchased a metal Dhyani Buddha of Amoghasiddhi (mudra of fearlessness, right palm out) to add to my Yab-Yum and bell and dorje. Jesus has been demythologized and His God placed at the center of my mandala - Absolutely transcendent - indistinguishable from the attributeless Clear Light of Unmitigated Reality of the Vajrayana. See? All this wordage from the last book of influence. Well, you asked!

Wow! I did not know there were so many well-read people around. Many good books have been mentioned, but I haven't seen anyone mention the Celestine Prophecy Books?!
The Celestine Vision blew my mind more than anything. ALL OF YOU go get a copy of the Celestine Prophecy Experiential Guide, as it is a personal guide to the psychedelic experience. Doing those mental exercises while tripping has completely changed my life! I'm not kidding, go get a copy.

Leary's books are all incredible, but I think Chaos and Cyberculture is his most progressive and will ultimately be the most influential.

Stanislav Grof is incredible, as is Ralph Metzner. The Ecstatic Adventure is THE BEST book as far as explaining the psychedlc/entheogenic experience from many diffeent perspectives. Very entertaining.

Food of the Gods (McKenna) and The Long Trip (Paul Devereux) are great tools to rethink history.

Has anyone read Steal This Book?
Go reread the Declaration of Independence and Leary's Declaration of Evolution! (Thanks for the reminder about the Communist Manifesto, too).

Damn, I could go on and on. There are so many incredible books and so little time to read them.

If you're still reading to this point, then leave your computer RIGHT NOW and go get a copy of the Celestine Prophecy Experiential Guide. It is better than any map you could ever get. You and your friends can all share a copy, but only open it when your consciousness is at a higher level than that of this horribly mundane reality. Trust me on this one....

Peace everybody

I'd definetly have to agree on the Alan Watts. His books are so lucid and I think each of his writings/books/lectures I have heard/read have had a profound effect on me. Also, the works of Carlos Castaneda, whether true or false, are profoundly life changing. You must read these books, I don't realy know what else to say about them but that they are so intriguing, ah. Anyway, I really liked Zen Mind: Beginner's Mind by Shunryu Suzuki, and the Tao-te-ching, Steven mitchell translation. Brave New World by Aldous Huxley was one I read while first starting my quest for knowledge, and Doors of Perception was good as well. For any of you scientist/shamans out there Quantum Mind by Arnold Mindell helped to solidly draw many connections for me, and ties in some psychology too. These sare all books which went to the very core of my being, and have profoundly changed my life.

it seems most of us read Brave New World, and I recently read the Unabomber Manifesto, only about 30 or so pages. Kaczynski puts very lucidly in essay format the psychological tendencies our soeciety puts on us. You should definitely read.

In response to the poster talking about the Celesetine Prophecy, that book is a badly written story ripping off many excellent authors. You must have read The Psychedelic Experience, by Leary, and the Castaneda books have much more things to say the the prophecy. I really think that book is a sham, and I think you should go closer to the source. No offense or anything.

I come from brilliance and I return to brilliance. What is this?
