spores viable after nearly two years?
    #3331455 - 11/07/04 09:33 PM (19 years, 6 months ago)

I have several unopened spore syringes from a year and a half ago and I wanted to use them, will they still be viable? They have been kept in the dark in temps of between 65-70.

Okay, I was kind of concerned because about 6 months ago I tried using one of them to inoculate some popcorn jars but I know I didnt prepare them right, it was a rushed job, so they didnt have the right moisture content and they never started colonizing, I think it was a combination of improper preparation, sterilization, and incubation conditions. It was such a half assed job because I had to keep it well hidden from a room mate and I had to do all the preparation while my room mate was making trips to walmart and such. Now I got the place to myself so I can do whatever I please ... so its time to get back into growing mushrooms.

There will surely be less viable spores than originally. But it should be enough if it was a good syringe to begin with.

Expect a couple extra days for germination.

I had a syringe stored for 7-8 months, originally got it from TheSporeWorks.

It was stored in a dark place, but.. the time period spanned through summer, where it was in the 90s - low 100s for several weeks.

When I finally got around to trying my hand at this hobby, the syringe was no longer viable.

The first time I knocked up 12 jars, none of them grew at all. The 2nd time I injected 5cc into a pint jar, still nothing. The 3rd time I shot the remaining 3cc spore solution into the sink and reclaimed the syringe for other uses. :P

I've stored them in the fridge for over 6yrs. and they were viable. Also don't forget to shake the hell out of that syringe in order to evenly distribute the spores as they will clump together. GL
