i`m planning to start building guitar fx boxes. wondering what sort of things are popular nowadays - keep it simple? distortion, wah, delay? or more complex designs incorporating vacuum tubes, ring modulators, filters, etc? also, if you are shopping for an fx box, what qualities or features are you looking for? how much would you pay? any tips or advice appreciated. stay loud!

I suppose you could get ideas from other stompbox creators like zvex or lovetone.
I can't give you much information off the top of my head but I think the boards at guitargeek.com could help. That's where I learned just about everything I know about guitar equipment. That would also be a good place to see what is popular. Lots of users there with styles covering just about all types of rock, and other styles as well.
I like having a pretty simple setup so I'm definitely not the person to ask

www.harmony-central.com has tons of user reviews on everything, with ratings on it all. Check there.
For me, I used to like the amp modeler pedal (distortion), but now I dig the wah and the crazy purple Line6 Filter Modeler. It's got a lot of monophonic and crazy filter sounds.

Something without batteries (in stead of batteries and adaptor) and multiple effects. if I would buy a new effects pedal it should have at least: -(tube) Distortion -Equalizer -Reverb -Delay A cool feature would be a built in Compressor and a preamp other cool optional effects: -chorus -flanger If I think of something else I'll post it. So I guess I would like a more complex design. but a simple thing isn't really a challenge for you right do you play guitar for yourself or are you going to buy these things for friends or something?

I don't find my effects processor to be limited...
And i much rather have something that has it all than all those loose boxes lying on the floor. the good thing about a multieffectprocessor is that you can make presets

a fully analog guitar fx unit would be sweet. with a tube preamp, ring mod, filters, distortion, delay, reverb, chorus, eq, phaser, flange, wah and pitch-shift. maybe integrate some kind of analog looper like the echoplex... put all of the knobs and LEDs in a mannequin body, and have two expresion pedals and eight footswitches on the floor. i'd pay 500 - $1000 for something like that. you might even find a market niche...

The sound from processors to me sounds tooooo processed i cant hear the individuality of my guitar, all of the guitars ive pluged mine into sounded EXACTLY the same. With the boxes i notice you can hear the one of a kind tone that every guitar has better than with the effects processors. I dont dispute that they are cool though i luv my digitech.

Line 6 pod pro > stompboxes everything you'll ever need and then some in one simple rackmountable unit.. digital amp and cabinet modeling, many kinds of distortion/overdrive, flanger, wah, delay, chorus, chromatic tuner.. 16 effects in all, 32 amp models, all programmable, all mixable, all customizable.. you can program up to 36 presets in, and you can switch them all through the optional (expensive) floorboard, that has a pedal for wah and one for volume as well as being able to switch to your preset channels. All in all this thing fucking rocks, and it sure beats burning over a grand on a clusterfuck of pedals and wires. reviews http://www.harmony-central.com/Events/WNAMM00/Line_6/POD-Pro.html http://archive.guitarplayer.com/archive/gear/0102bench.shtml http://guitargeek.com/gearview/484/ http://www.homerecordingconnection.com/review.php?ax=reviews&id=63

thanks for the help everybody i think, `a fully analog fx unit` with a choice of different fx would be best for me to make. nice idea, thanks jinx. manniquin bods are my speciality.
how about fully tubed with 250volts running thru it?

hi stefan without batteries.....not many choices for designs. perhaps a recharging system like we have for mobiles.

i cannot claim to be able to play any instrument, but i`m not shy to pick things up and make some noise.
i`m going back to college next year and am trying to find a way out of doing some mcjob. so making custom stompboxes seems appealing, i will give it a try

make a tape echo, or you know what would be cool?...Make a DSD digital delay. DSD is the digital technology that they use in Super Audio CDs and it sounds SOOO good. Just like analog.
Or, if that fails you can make modified TS-808 clones. I like my Analog Man.
