Simple way to set up iptables
    #3331173 - 11/07/04 10:14 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

I'm looking for a relatively simple way to set up an anti AP2P blocklist. I was hoping to use the blocklist converter from http://bluetack.co.uk, because those are the blocklists I used with protowall when I was on windows (thanks to bi0). And now that I am on linux and beginning filesharing again (thanks to bi0 again) I was looking to set up iptables to stay safe.

I've looked through a few tutorials and I get completely lost in them. It seems like I would have to list each and every single ip address to block in the script. I tried using a script that I got from bluetack.co.uk but it would not work. I posted at fedoraforum.org about this issue --> here.

I'm basically lost and was wondering if anyone could help me out or point me towards some resources directed towards complete linux noobs.

Thanks for reading.

I'm using linblock. It uses a blocklist based on the one found on methlabs.org.

Thanks for that link.

bi0: I just now opened up the documentation and found this, it may be of interest to you (and myself ... )

Code:
OPTIONS

All command line options are optional.

-u url
Specifies the URL from which to retrieve the blacklist
data. The default is "http://www.bluetack.co.uk/con?
fig/antip2p.txt". The URL should point to a text file
that contains IP ranges in the "PeerGuardian" format.

edit: I also found these that look helpful:

Code:
       -i file

As an alternative to -u, you can specify a local file
with this option from which to read the blacklist
data. -u and -i are mutually exclusive.

-l Enable logging of packets rejected by the antip2p
blacklist. If not specified, there will be no entry
in the system logs for dropped/rejected packets.

cool - sources should be easy to modify then. I think I'd want to host them locally so I could manually edit the list for exclusions/inclusions, considering there's no blm equivalent.

I set the script up using whatever the default blocklist is. I'm not sure if I set it up correctly, but gkrellm is telling me that my CPU usage has been in the high 80's for a long while now, but I don't know if that's due to linblock. I checked "top" but I don't know what process I would be looking for to see if it worked.

I also went to riaa.com, the only difference i noticed was that it took a bit to load, but still did.

hmmm ....

This looks like a nice decent tutorial. Reminds me of how my instructor went over it.

http://www.linuxguruz.com/iptables/howto/

This is with the iptables tool. You don't have to specify every single ip address. You can specify ranges and groups...

Here is some info on filtering
