Oven sterilization?
    #3330753 - 11/07/04 08:06 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

I was wondering if you could use the oven to sterilize quart jars of grain. Couldnt you in theory bake the jars at like 300 degrees for an hour instead of pressure cook them for an hour? I just dont have the 100 bucks to spend on a decent sized cooker right now ...

At 300F, you'll have about 12-15PSI inside the jar.  I'm pretty sure you are headed for big moisture loss with that.  You might even get a "exploding lid" events.

Try partial sterilization, which is steam/boiling sterilization for 1 hour per day for 3 days.

Euphoric Disaster:
"Another, more time consuming method is the fractional sterilization. In this case, the jars fitted with a filter or a polyfil lid filter are boiled or steamed 212?F (100?C) for 1 hour in a covered pot, three days in a row. Between the boiling steps the jars are best kept warm, around 30?C, to allow the remaining spores to germinate. The basic principle behind this method is that any resistant spores should germinate after the first heating and therefore be susceptible to killing during the second and third heating." -- Read the FAQs

In a pressure cooker, your jars get to about 250 F at 15 pounds. The beauty part is that the water in the jars doesn't boil. The water that you put in there stays in there.

If you just use a hot oven, your water will start turning to steam when the jars hit 212 F. You end up with sterile, dry jars.

Note. If you pressure cook and then immediately release the pressure, the jars will boil out right away. Let the cooker cool before pulling the rocker off.

simmer in clean water( 15-25 min)

rinse once more allow to drain for 30 min

Alright, well I really can't affoard to own a pressure cooker at the moment, but I could "borrow" one from walmart. Buy it, use it, and return it same day. By the time this batch is ready for harvest I'll have enough disposable cash to buy one to keep. Does that sound like a solid plan or do you think walmarts going to give me problems about returning it?

i don't know about wal marts return policy.

The first time i used my PC i didn't put enough water in the bottom and the rocker stopped moving after about forty five minutes. Ever since then it has stunk!

Well the thing is I need enough money to pay for the pressure cooker and an ounce of weed, and still have enough left over to pay for car insurance a couple of days from now. So I've got 500 bucks. 250 for weed, 175 for car insurance, and the remainer will JUST pay for my pressure cooker, but I can't have no money, so I'm gonna have to use it and return it ...

If you dont have a PC, Id recommend the PF tek. It will give you good insight, a good trip and enough time to save up some scrilla to buy a pc.

otherwise, try experimenting with tyndallization.

What the hell are you talking about? I'm not talking about growing lbs. I'm talking about growing enough for me and my friends. When I say I'll buy a PC to keep when I have the money I mean like when I get my paycheck, damn. I'm just sayin I can't spend all my money and be left without car insurance money when its time to send it in ... nobody ever said anything about wanting to grow anything commercially.
