Re-Inoculation?
    #3330633 - 11/07/04 07:34 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

I inoculated 10 jars on Tuesday of last week using a liquid Karo culture. 8 jars show a significant amount of colonization, while 2 jars show none at all. There doesn't appear to be any smell or contamination in the two "empty" jars. Should I use some Karo solution and re-inoculate them?

Also, how long, on average, does it take for a liquid culture to compltetely colonize a 1/2 pint BRF jar? The strain I'm using is Cambodian if that makes any difference. THANKS

I have two half pint jars of Cambo's going right now and it's taken about 3.5 weeks for them to get about 80-90% colonized. I have them around 80 degrees farenheit. It depends so much on conditions though that no one can really tell you how long yours will take.

Really? Three and a half weeks? I specifically used Cambodians because I heard they were fast colonizers and agressive fruiters--is that not the case?

Oh yeah, I also used spore syringes, another factor that will make things different.

Yeah, that should add an additional 5-7 days, but 3.5 weeks still seems a little long. Well, I guess time will tell. Anyway, should I re-inoculate those two "empty jars"?

Do you plan to make anymore jars soon? I ask because if so I would so just keep those jars available until you make that batch. If not than I would say why not, you could even re-sterilize them first.

Temp was not optimal 100% of the time as well btw. Syringes usually take a couple weeks or so, so I'm not far behind.

I say go for it ....yeah..but then again cooler conditions slow colonization down, so maybe they're just growing really really slow?....gl
