    #3330558 - 11/07/04 07:17 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

I live in NY. I found these on rotting wood today. I am waiting on a sporeprint. If anyone can help ID them that would awesome. Thank you.

if it is indeed a pleurotus, it is probably edible.

i would wait for more opinions before eating, though. plus those guys look kinda old... i dont know if i would eat those even if they were edible

well here on the west coast ive found a few of the similar which i had identified as Hohenbuehelia Petaloides, which is the shoehorn oyster... I'm not saying thats what you have, but it does look quite similar. A spore print would help... is there evidence that there was a veil? does it smell like anise or seafood? some info would help alot more than just plain pix!

Those are "late fall oysters" also known as "Green Oysters" because the pins are usually green. Sorry I can't seem to find a latin name for these on the net and don't have my books with me.

They are listed as edible in most field guides but the flesh is very tough and requires a long cooking time.

Maybe somebody else can find that latin name for you.

I think you mean Panellus serotinus.
Either way they dont look too good, kind of like they are too old to be eaten.

Yeah that's it eris, Panellus serotinus. No wonder I couldn't find it, I thought it was a pleurotus.

Make sure you get a spore print before you eat any. Paxillus atrotomentosus looks very similar to those, and it is a close relative of a deadly species. It should not be eaten.

Paxillus have brown spore prints, and Pleurotus have white to pale lilac spore prints.

I agree that they look a lot like Panellus serotinus, I just want that we should be very sure before they are eaten.

Happy mushrooming!
