Cakes on a rack? Help!?

Hi Everyone!
Maybe you saw my post a couple days ago... I have cakes which were exposed to light on the bottom... had hardly any pins on the cakes but when I turned them over, the bottoms were covered with babies.
So I flipped the cakes and now they are looking great and I have many, many shrooms.
I decided today to check the bottoms (formerly light exposed tops) and noticed 4 babies and loads of "pre-shrooms" (primordia they are called?). I picked off the babies for fear they will rot underneath an cause a contam.
The big Q is what do I do about the primordia which are forming? I will soon have more shrooms trying to bust out of the bottom. Should I put the cakes on a rack and let them grow in all directions or shall I just continue to watch and pick babies off the bottoms if I see them?
I think I might have really screwed up here.
Thanks.

get rid of the light source from the bottom. That's the first thing you need to do. Without light, you will get very few pins. That means less chance for rotting. Pins don't rot(even on the bottom) as long as the mycelium doesn't give up on it. So, if you check every 3-5 days, you'll be fine. But you really need to get rid of whatever is causing the light to bounce on the cake on the botoom.
Good luck.

Can you put the cake on a jar lid? (you can buy replacement lids for way cheap, for canning jars) (one without holes from a nail) That way the babys cannot pop out of the bottom, due to them having no rack to grow thru. Ive seem many a pic of people using this method.

When I used to do cakes I would get lots of pins on the bottom. The cakes sat directly on moist perlite and would just push up through the perlite and grow as usual. Never tried using a rack, but it might not be a bad idea, just make sure it's clean!

Good news about the rot. This was my biggest worry.
OK... I didn't really want to use the rack right now as it would be hard to clean and I don't want to risk contams. But it does seem to me this would give more surface area and may not be a bad idea. I'll try it some other time.
I really liked my cake holders... the looked so clean but they let in the light. I have now set the cakes on top of jar lids as has been suggested and as I should have done from day one.
Thanks for easing my fears. It's going so well and I'm so close I'd hate to blow it.
Cheers!

I wouldn't worry about surface area increase for cakes. I get about 150g per cake per flush and I still have plenty of surface are to grow more mushrooms from... Usually, they cluster up a lot when they need more space.
Good luck
Oh.. here's my cake waiting 3rd flush.. note the cake plate. 25cents at walmart in the plant section.

I use leftover tins from potpies. Easy to sterilize, too.. just throw them in the oven. Those were my first ones... Since then, I've learned to fill them up more with verm, and really push the cake down in there.. more water holding capacity is a good thing.

Thanks Sam ... 150g per cake per flush! Wow. That is much more than I expected one could get from a cake. If I get half of that I think I'd pee myself.

Nice. I was paranoid and did not dunk and roll. I will certainly be doing it for my next flush.

150g per cake is amazing.... how the hell? lol...
I got 150 grams wet off all 3 of those Ecuador cakes in the pics..... lol
My best yield so far on a per-cake basis has been 78.75g.. cased.
