Is H2O2 stable at PC temps?
    #3330072 - 11/07/04 10:36 AM (19 years, 4 months ago)

Noob question;

I'm thinking about preparing some PF style BRF jars with 1/10 H2O2 instead of just water. After PC I'll knock them up with liquid/mycelium suspension.

Will the peroxide still be in there after the PC? Is this a bad idea for any reason?
Thanks

I think adding h202 to your pc kind of defeats the purpose of pcing in the first place. As far as h202 stability at higher temps im not so sure. But if you pc your substrate correctly peroxide shouldnt be necessary at this stage in the game.

Hi Kido,

I read that H2O2 is good for the myc. They turn it into O2 which enhances colonization. No?

i thought CO2 enhances colonization

H202 is most efficiently used in two ways:

1. As a 1/10 (H2o2/H20) dilluted spray mixture for spraying and hydrating your cakes/casings while in the fruiting chamber. Thus oxidizing many forms of contaminants and when provided conservatively not negatively effecting your mycelium growth.

2. An additive to standing water in a PmP growth chamber, helping to sterlize the water being evaporated to create humidity. Also a dilluted application.

When dealing with soaking and hydrating your substrate, whether in terms of 'dunking' or pressure cooking, it is apparent much smaller amounts are applied for additional security to avoid contamination. This only being a cap full or so at most.

I would avoid adding h202 to a soaking substrate unless you were boiling to sterilize in a normal pot vs a PC.

I beleive a pressure cooker is more then capable of containing any threats to your substrate. By all means introduce H2o2 using the remaining methods as a cautionary step, not as a planned means to depend on sanitation.

No, it is not.

H2O2 degrades rapidly as the temperatures climb passed ~40?C.

In one of the techs for agar, it says to add H2O2 at a temp of 130F due to agar solidifying around 120F. When I tried it, my agar didn't solidify untill around 100F or so. I would imagine because the tech is suggesting waiting for a temp of 130 to add H2O2, that must mean H2O2 is ok at that temp?

If I understand PC temps properly, they get to over 200deg F, Which would most def destroy all H2O2, thus just wasting your H2O2, unless you want to make a double attempt at sterilizing your medium, using PC and H2O2.

h2o2 is harmless in a PC it breaks up at 180F if i recall correctly. i've read a tek where a guy spray his jars down beforehand with h2o2 though i don't see why... a pc can bake it all out, for the most part.

yeah, don't mess with H2O2 before birth. It's a total waste. H2O2 degrades relatively fast even at room temperature. Only good for few days or so in open air. It'll degrade very rapidly and will increase exponentially as temperature rises.

And on top of all that, H2O2 will kill spores. So, whatever is left inside(there shouldn't be any after PC, but...) the jar will only hurt your grow.

I tried using CO2 bleed incubator in early stages of colonization but didn't see a huge difference. Don't worry about manipulating gas content in the jars. It's far more trouble for that tiny little benefit. There is also a point of CO2 concentration when the growth is slowed. If you manually add CO2, you'll get there quicker. Just too much work.

Good luck

Sam
