too much moisture in the jar?
    #3330045 - 11/07/04 12:26 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

me and a friend mixed up our first batch last night. We mixed enough ingredients for about a jar and a half at a time. We ended up making about 13 jars. Used boiling water to sterilize them too. Now, it looks as if there is slight moisture fogging up some places on the inside of the jar. not too bad though. I was wondering if this is normal or if I should be concerned?

Its normal for this to happen, I would however be careful about standing water at the bottom of your jar. This is a bigger concern then moisture around the jar, which can result from temperature variations between substrate and its outside enviornment.

one cannot use boiling water in order to sterilize anything real proper.
i read about ppl doing pftek (which i guess u did),
who succeded just boiling/steaming ur jars.

if u were to prepare grains, ull fail 101%

thanks for the promptness. There is no standing water IN the jars to I think im pretty safe then. I was told that grain can't be boiled so thats why we have to wait on using grain. No PC. thanks again.

so u did do PFETEK or what?
u dont clearly state how u do it.

concerning steaming grain,
steam rises to a temp of about 100?C which is clearly not enough to
kill every bacteria that may be attatched or within the grains.

there is a reason PCing of grains is a commonly and wide spread practise,
since this is the only way to REALLY kill the endospored/bacteria on it.
talking that whats impossible for one can be done by others is nearly redundant
facing the topic of steaming grains.

That 101% is wrong. Chance of failure is high, but not guaranteed. Some get away with it, most don't. Just being technical here, I guess.

Also, PF tek DOES NOT require PC. Standard sterilization method for bacteria is 100C for 15 min minumum.

And as far as endospores, there's always partial sterilization. It's safe and convenient to use a PC, but it's not a requirement. Having pressurized system IS NOT the only way to procure sterilized jars.

But anyone serious about this hobby should get one. You are going to end up getting one later anyways...
