Adding nutritional supplements to BRF cakes - an experiment
    #3329656 - 11/07/04 07:23 AM (12 years, 1 month ago)

I've often heard that worm castings make excellent ammendments to casing layers and/or substrates. So that got me thinking.

I have some stuff here called ThriveAlive B1. It is a very low analysis plant supplement.

As you can see, it contains 1% Nitrogen, 1% Phosphorus, and 1.5% Potassium. It also contains 0.09% Vitamin B1 and 0.25% Humic acids. Since it is derrived from kelps, it will also have various cytokinins and auxins, which are plant growth hormones.. I do not know what effects they have on mushrooms.

I decided to make some BRF jars to test what it will do, if anything.

The recommended dosage on the bottle is 1-3cc per quart of water.

I wanted to diversify a little, so I mixed up 2 batches of water. One with 3cc in 1 quart of water, and one with 1cc in 1 quart of water.

Obviously I only used 1/2 cup of water out of each quart mixture since I was only doing 2 jars of each.

I then mixed up 3 batches of BRF using the water.

I made 6 jars total.

2 = Regular BRF with tap water
2 = BRF with the 3cc/quart ThriveAlive mixture
2 = BRF with the 1cc/quart ThriveAlive mixture

Hypothesis: The added nutrients will give the mycelium added vigor compared to the regular BRF control jars.

The jars are PC'd and waiting for my lazy ass to make a karo syringe so I can knock them up.

I will be updating this thread as things progress. In the meantime, I will be sacrificing goats and chickens to the mushroom gods in an attempt to further my success.

I didn't really mean to directly compare this stuff to worm castings... it's not. It's just that worm castings are a low-analysis fertilizer also, but thats where the similiarities end.

I think worm castings also have small ammounts of humic and fulvic acids in them, but they aren't going to have any growth hormones.

Hmm, what would happen, if one were to chop up a multivitamin (centrum) into these mixes?

You would just have to try it..... I would question whether mycelium can utilize or even needs some if not most of the vitamins we do..

I have no idea of course, though.

Just a little update..

I've been busy, so I didn't get around to inoculating them until a couple of days ago. I used a Cambodian liquid culture to knock them up.

I'll be posting sets of pics documenting how they progress as time passes.

I can't wait to hear of your results. My friend's not even completely through his first grow and it's taking him everything he has not to experiment with his 12 cakes...which are colonizing nicely w/ Thai Koh Samui BTW.
