Does anyone know....
    #3328581 - 11/06/04 09:36 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

how to calibrate a humidity gauge?
I don't know if mine is working correctly. Here's the situation. I'm using the pf tek. I set up my terrarium exactly the way the diagram and instructions have shown me. I'm using an ultrasonic humidifier, I have the four coke bottles all connected by vinyl tubing. I have the perlite and water in the tub I know I've done everything the tek has said to do. The temp inside the tub is maintaining perfectly. But my humidity gauge reads at 80% and it won't get any higher. I'm confused as to why this is happening if I'm following the tek completely. I was thinking maybe the gauge is wrong
Does anyone have an ultrasonic humidifier? Am I using it wrong? Does anyone know how to calibrate the gauge? Is it possible I set up something wrong.  I have not put my cakes in there yet, I want to make sure the enviroment is under control before I decide to birth them. If anyone has any advise or answers to my problem, please help me out...this is driving me nuts.
Thank You,

~Desiree~

Dunno if you checked this already:

I've never used it so I can't say if it works or not.

Thanks..I hadn't checked it out until now. I hope this works and I hope that's the problem.

Desiree, some gauges stop at 80%RH. Read the manual and see where it goes.

Also try wrapping the gauge with wet hot towel and let it stablize. It should read about 95%.

I'm not really sure why you chose to use perlite in addition to ultrasonic. I'm gonna guess what's going on here. Did you cap the coke bottles? They should to be capped except when you are draining them. Also, with the ultrasonic setup with bottles, you are supposed to run it constantly. Don't put it on a timer.

You said you had perlite in there too. You should have at least 1" of perlite above the water line. Try adding more perlite or take some water out. Be careful not to expose the aquarium heater if you have one.

Advice... Think about PMP. A lot less maintenance with it and it produces reliable results. You can use perlite in PMP.

Here's the link in case you missed it.

Good luck

An admin suggested that I use the perlite. The humidifier does run constantly, there is no timer. The coke bottles are capped and the gauge reads up to 100%

I already have the terrarium set-up, I really don't want to have to do a different set-up.
That would mean buying more supplies. I work alot and don't really have the time to do all this over again, at least not at the moment.
Is it possible to leave the jars colonized for to long?
If that's not a problem, then I may reconsider using another set-up.

I would like to use what I have. As of right now, I'm using the "salt in a sealed container" calibration method. I'm hoping that this works.
Thanks Sam, any more info would be much appreciated!

Desiree, don't seal it up tight. Ultrasonic humidifier needs to move the moist air through. Try to give it a small vent by putting the lid on the terrarium loosely.
