I've never grown mushrooms before. These are from a kit. I had always imagined that the mushrooms would just look like mushrooms, small at first, and getting bigger as they pop out at the top. However, after 8 days, the stuff just looks like a pot of cotton wool that's now crept to the top. Enlarge the picture and look carefully at that fluffy white cloudy stuff coming out of the surface. That's not right, surely?

if thats your first time its going great, they dont just go from spores to mushrooms there are certian steps and stages they go through. make sure you drop the temp and expose to light 12 hours and fan for air exchanges a few time a day and in a few weeks youll see those shrooms youve been wanting to see so bad. and good job on no contams seeing how its your first grow and you jumped right into a casing. and that white stuff as you refer to it is great, that what you want its the green stuff you dont want. if you just cant wait any longer you can eat the white stuff and have a great trip but i would recomend waiting itll be worth it in the end.

thats very right. that cotton will cover the surface, then make these teeeeeeeeeeenyyyy tttiiiiiiiiiinnnnyyyyy little balls, the balls will grow upwards a little, then grow a red head, then they turn into mini shroomies.

This site has a ton of pictures and posts showing and describing shrooms growing at every stage of growth. Your casing looks fine from what I can tell from the pic. Check out some of the info on this site.

You are right. It looks like some fungus got into your casing. Oh wait. That's what you want. 
Take a deep breath. Look at some other pictures.

Fuzzy white = goodness. Other colors = badness. What does your nose say? It should smell kind of musty good, like mushrooms. If it smells like garbage that needs to go out, it's garbage that needs to go out.

dude you cant just dive head on into something like this. you need to at least know the very basics, for the mere fact of what if you had a contam and you didnt know about it and now the mycelium has overgrown it and your about to eat some nasty shrooms that can make you sick or even worse case scenario kill you. but best of luck to you.

A little extreme but it illustrates well that you should have this knowledge prior to growing something.

The white is mycelium, think about it like this.....Shrooms r like flowers u plant some seeds (spores) and soon the roots will grow after that a beutiful flower appears and then its chow time.

Okay. 2 weeks to the day since starting, but nothing much has happened since I mailed nearly a week ago.
The good news is that there is one tiny shroom.
However, the cotton wool stuff in the base has stayed the same. There is not much more on the top.
I should point out that these shrooms have been left under a 250W HPS @32*C (albeit with a clear plastic lid keeping a lot of moisture in). The spring water (200ml) that was in the base (of the propagator, not the shroom container) has all evaporated. I have since added another 200ml, this time with tap water (I know, no mineral water to hand)
The perlite (sp?) stuff at the top of the container, and the shrooms in general seem to have completely dried out. Should I get some more mineral water on them asap?

you should probably mist the verm on top it looks super dry also there seems to be a few more heads against the side or is this just me i see 2 other brown spots next to you obviuos shroom
also next time use something not clear then the will poke out on top
but defintely moisture on top and thats a really thick casin/ casing layer it should put out some nice fruits good luck man
