its the religion..stupid...
    #3326600 - 11/06/04 03:17 AM (12 years, 3 months ago)

OK..so maybe there was no "diebold factor" at work in the election..which leaves the other explanation ..

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=st...ection_religion

Quote:

The problem, said Rabbi Michael Lerner of Tikkun magazine, is that too many fellow liberals are "trapped in a long-standing disdain for religion and tone-deaf to the spiritual needs that underlie the move to the right." They need to shed a core belief that Bush voters "are fundamentally stupid or evil."

The left, he and others argue, has to show the religious basis for its policy positions and not let the right define morality.

i was one of those liberals under the delusion that separation of church & state somehow made america a non-christian country...of course..nothing could be further from the truth...

the rabbi in the quote above is wrong..however..in that we dont disdain religion..only that of the majority...and we very often do show the religious basis for our policy positions...based..that is..on an alternative religion that an otherwise liberal christian would find unpalatable..and vote for bush accordingly...

americans like to think that we live in a secular society..but the reality is very different...and if us liberals want anyone to listen to us..then we should listen to the rabbi..irregardless of our own personal religious beliefs...

Dont let the issue of the fraudulent machines just fade away. It is blatantly obvious that the voting machines were tampered with, rigged, or faulty.

"I contemplate with solemn reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should "make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof," thus building a wall of separation between Church and State."

"The civil Government, though bereft of everything like an associated hierarchy, possesses the requisite stability, and performs its functions with complete success, whilst the number, the industry, and the morality of the priesthood, and the devotion of the people, have been manifestly increased by the total separation of the church from the State."

- James Madison, 1819

Im pretty sure it is one of the Amendments to the Constitution. I could be wrong but I am pretty sure it is.

If I am correct then that technically means both Kerry and Bush ran their campaigns unconstitutionally and we could impeach Bush. Of course that would never hold up because there would be no one backing the claim but maybe me and 1 or 2 other people.

how did kerry involve religion in his campaign?

Seems to me like he kept his religion separate, which, sadly, is probably why he lost

He kept saying that he was catholic. That is bringing religion into the campaign. He wanted the religious votes based on the fact he was religious not the fact his policies were good. Bush did the same thing.

kerry may have mentioned that he was catholic, in a response or something, but he didnt make it a part of his policy or push it in anyones face. I didnt get the impression that he was trying to appeal to the voters through religion. Would a self righteous catholic be so liberal on abortion and gay marriage?

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof"

is what the first amendment says. The common interpretation is that this doesn't really spell out 'separation of church of state.' About a month ago, I remember talking to someone on here - I forget who, possibly luvdemshrooms - about how I think they may have intended 'establishment' to be noun. I think it's usually read as a verb, which is what the other person was arguing (I can't find the thread). Regardless, I think that Jefferson, along with Madison, who was one of the main authors of the Constitution, made their intentions clear.

I think it is one of the later Amendments.
