Best casing substrate with no PC
    #3325947 - 11/05/04 09:47 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

What is the best casing substrate for not having a pressure cooker?
Should I do BRF and crumble them? That means less yields right? What about popcorn?

Popcorn is a grain, so it has to be PC'd, Regular PF cakes are fine to use as a casing substrate, it will take more to produce the same flush as grain will thou.

Damn, damn, damn! Do you think that the yields are of the difference that I should go ahead and wait til I get a PC? How much of a difference are we talking between a rye grain casing and a BRF casing?

Would the ideal scenario without a PC be to spawn BRF to poo/straw?

theres lot's of different results from microwaving, to much effort IMO

>>Damn, damn, damn! Do you think that the yields are of the difference that I should go ahead and wait til I get a PC? How much of a difference are we talking between a rye grain casing and a BRF casing?

if you had 1/2 quart of say WBS and 1/2 quart of BRF the grain will outgrow the BRF

>>Would the ideal scenario without a PC be to spawn BRF to poo/straw?

thats what i would do, PF cakes make good spawn

PF cakes arent that bad, if you case the cake it will perform better than if you just let it be a cake, the most ive ever had from a single PF cake is 100G but they tend to be less potent than the grain, grain is about 15-20% more potent than PF cakes

if your wanting a larger yeild without a pc do what i did on my 3rd grow. Use the straw tek and subsitute the stated spawn for brf cakes as spawn. it takes more but itll work, i got good results even though i got contams after the second flush it was still worth the effort and pretty easy to do as long as you follow the tek and stay sterile. but if its your first grow or first couple i wouldnt try it. i know now i jumped into it to soon and have since went back to cakes and a few simpl 50/50+ casing when i feel confident. either way good luck with whatever you choose to do.

Or you can just grow cakes with much care. I'm getting around 150g per cake per flush for 1st and 2nd flush. Third flush seems a little smaller. And you know what?! Cakes have a great look to them.

lots of water supply to cakes. I keep my verm wet.. maybe a little too wet for some, but it works for me. I also haven't had any aborts yet. I think it's all about water delivery to get good yield.

I would never microwave to sterilize grains. Pc-ing in jars keeps the moisture constant when sealed correctly and at 15 psi you always know your providing the same sterilization as applied to the tek your following.

Microwaves are a completely different form of heating. Different models have different out puts and the results will be inconsistant. If you want to take this hobby seriously invest in the pressure cooker and do it right.

This doesnt mean there is no room for innovation, but it does mean someone asking questions about sterilization is probably fairly new to the concepts involved, and should cover the basics before tackling an unknown method. Just MO

A PC is only like 30 bucks off ebay for one that does 10 quart jars at a time -shrug-

Microwave and oven are dry heat and shouldnt be used to sterilize grain, it won't work very well. You could maybe try it and maybe if your lucky get it to work a few times but overall you most likly wont get it beyond luck.
