I know PF TEK says to pick the abhorts before there heads turn black, and to pick mature shrooms before the veil under the cap breaks. Is the veil breaking when the cap starts to expand or is it the thing under the cap. nt what way will it "break". Are the mushrooms before the viel breaking less potent or is do you just wait for this because thats when there the biggest. How black will the abhorts heads get? Some have dark heads (not black) but I just think thats cause there small. Please tell me the perfectly ideal time to pick shrooms. If you pick one earlie because its in the way does that effect potency or is it just less psycybin because its smaller? Please help.

The veil most times will break due to expansion of the cap, not upward growth. However, environmental conditions can cause the veil to be less durable and detach from upward growth. I believe the intention of the 'veil breaking' harvest rule is to pick before the caps flatten out. Also, one of the reasons that the tek says to pick them then is to prevent sporulation in the fruiting chamber. The spores can cause an overlay situation and increase the risk of contamination. The perfectly ideal time to pick really depends on your setup. Cake? Casing? Clustered shrooms or coming up individually? But don't get too hung up on it. You'll be happy no matter.

Why what happens if I pick after the veil flattens out?
