New to Casing - Q!
    #3324351 - 11/05/04 02:08 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

my plans are to incubate 4 quart jars of popcorn. then to case them with vermiculite/hydrated lime/crushed oyster shell/coco coir. (60/40 tek i think. w/ lime and shell added to it.)
- Should i use a print i made or order syringes online for my first casing?
- Should i use coco coir or peat moss? and then this is all i need to do this. right? ive made cakes before so have all that stuff
- Do i have to mix casing mix w/ manure and straw?
already. thanks in advance!

Either work fine. Prints give you many syringes but it's really up to you.

With coir PH isn't an issue you need to worry about like you do with peat. You want to mix coir/verm or peat/verm/something for ph.

Look at the teks on this site.

ok did some research. i have to get some wheat straw and dehydrated manure. then i have to pasteurize these. ill be using this tek: http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/23705
then i mix the pasteurized straw/poo w/ colonized popcorn. then put a layer of casing down. then oven bag. then more casing. correct???

I don't think you need the straw/poo. Thats only if you want more substrate I believe because it doesn't act as a casing. So you could bypass the straw/poo ordeal if you want. I may be wrong.

The way I understood you question, you are going to put the spawn in with the poo/straw and put the casing layer on at that time. I don't think this is a good idea. \

As I understand the proceedure, you are supposed to spawn into your bulk subtrate and let that fully colonize before you add a casing layer, so as to let the rhizomorphic mycelium grow through the casing layer evenly.

right?

ok i think i see what he's trying to do. Im pretty sure he just wants to case his 4 quarts of rye. Guy, you dont need any straw or manure, that is called spawning when you use those. You spawn to gain more substrate. I think you just want to make a casing. You just mix up the casing mix (60/40) pasteurize it. Then make your casing. You dont need poo or straw at all. Hope this helps.
