xbox mod and soldering help
    #3321426 - 11/04/04 07:09 PM (19 years, 4 months ago)

I ordered the xecuter3 for my xbox. I've tried to solder it on, but it just doesn't work. I've tried to desolder the joints, but I don't know if it looks that good. This is what it looks like.

Does it look alright, whatelse can I do to clean it up some more if I need to?

that top pic shows an awful lot of solder splash.

the flux is inconsequential but can be washed off with board cleaner. either clean that solder off with copper braid and make cleaner joints or maybe try using some kind of stiff plastic and see if that solder splash will just "pop" off. just don't scratch the board. if it doesn't come off easily then use braid.

in the bottom pic the 2nd and 3rd pins from the right look like they could possibly be solder splash shorted. also, several joints look "cold". a good joint will have a little, smooth "pool" on the pad on the board that looks kinda like it is pulling up the pin like water surface tension would pull the surface up a stick.

the trick is to hold the soldering tip against the board pad and the pin simultaneously. let them get good and hot and then barely touch the solder to the top of the pin. watch as gravity pulls the liquid solder down to the pad and collects and starts the surface tension trick. add tiny doses of solder as necessary. now pull the tip away while keeping the board and pin very still. maybe blow on it. you want it to solidify without moving even the slightest. those solder stations with alligator clip "hands" can help tremendously. practice makes perfect.

well I think the problem was I left the iron on too long and the tin burnt off leaving only lead.

keep a wet sponge at your station. routinely wipe excess solder and oxidation off, re-tin with fresh solder, and wipe on sponge again throughout any soldering project. that's pratcically rule #1.
