 help! noob messed up

Hi, im starting my first attempt to grow shrooms right now. Today I PC'd some jars for my 1st time and at 50 min. the PC went dry, i turned it off, took off the cap to relieve the pressure, and (not thinking at all) put some water in the PC... which caused all of my jars to crack. the jars are cracked, but still complete, I dont see any shards of glass in the PC... im wondering if ill still have a chance of colonizing these, or should I just throw them out and start over? The jars are still in the PC cooling right now

NO way to know for sure. Who knows if those cracks are large enough to let things through. Bacteria and such are microscopic. I wouldn't risk it.

ok.. I think im going to try to use them anyway, could it really hurt anything? some of the jars dont look like they are cracked all the way through (just tiny cracks at the thick bottom of a glass) If they all get contam'd, ive gotta throw em out anyway. I also taped plastic bags over all the cracks(all the cracks are at the bottoms of glasses, they do not run up the glass.

Maybe try just innocluating one, the one you think has the worst crack in it. If it does okay, then you can try to inoculate the rest. Minimal risk invloved. You definitely won't be able to use the jars a second time though.

what is this risk you speak of? im not worried about spores, because I have already started liquid cultures of the 2 strains I got (btw- THE gave me 2 strains(B+ and South American)in my buy 1 get 1 free for 15$, great deal i think) The jars will be thrown out anyway? I love to emperiment with things, but if theres something im missing plz let me know.

Who knows what those people are trying to say with the risk. I say do it. You can only learn from it. But watch out for contams and dispose of any that contam ASAP.

just quarantine them. if they contam, toss them. try innoculating after several days gone sterile. trash the jars once you're done using them, successful or not. you won't easily notice a bacterial contam at first, but you'll surely get a whiff of it if a crack let it in.
prepare to whip up a second batch of jars asap, make sure you know exactly what you're doing! your mistake is just like throwing water on a light bulb

Oss and Oeric say to toss jars with cracks but don't say why. the risks are pretty obvious; contamination, loss of moisture and of course cutting yourself. but hey, if you want to play with broken glass, that's your choice.

Hey, Druggie, I'm gonna give you an advice. Stick to ideals if you want to do well. If you have cracked jars, you should throw the away. You'll need new jars for next batch anyways. At this point, even drinking glasses would be better than broken jars if you can't afford anymore jars.
You can recycle your substrate. Just dump them back into a large bowl. You probably lost all the water to flashing when you vented your PC. If they are still a bit wet, add no more than 50cc per jar. I found my jars with only 45cc of water colonizing fairly well.
Also, don't vent the PC until it's cool. If the temperature is higher than 212F at sealevel, it's gonna cause water to flash instantly and you'll lost water content in the jars. And rapid pressure drop causes temp drop. Glass can handle pressure but can't handle rapid temp change. It'll most definitely crack again if you vent in the future. Don't vent. Let it cool on it's own, preferrable down to ambient.
Anyways, I'm sorry you lost your jars. I do want to wish you good luck next time, though.

-update-
I injected 3 jars with B+ and 3 with South African on 05/11.
I don't really have any way to heat the jars, so they are staying at 70-75f.
On 10/11 I could see small growth in all the B+ jars, but none on the SA.
On 15/11 I could see more growth on the B+(jars about 1/5 full with mycelium) but there was still no growth on the SA. I injected some of my B+ liquid culture in the 3 SA jars. (I assume these were old spores? Or could they just need warmer temps?)
On 19/11 I can see small growth on the SA + B+ liquid culture jars, and the B+ jars are at about 1/3 growth.
I can see no signs of contams, except in one of the B+ jars there is a small amount of black residue inside and on the outer edge of a small crack in the glass. The residue over mycelium growth, which looks very white and healthy. Anyone know what this might be?

hey druggie here is a really cheap way to temporarily heat those jars up. take a 32 ounce gatorade bottle pour boiling water in it but not to much the bottle is going to shrink. and screw the lid on and spray with lysol and put in inncubator. and please nobody tell me this wont work cause i had to do it for my first jars.

Wet rott? I'm not sure, i dont remeber what ur substrate is but that doesnt sounds good, and if the mycelium is really fluffy like cotton, then its cobb webb, not a great contam either, it spread and sux. But i donno, i skimmed, maybe someone else knows? gl
